I agree with everything the previous reviewer said. I just wanted to add this book is as good as A Theology of Liberation by Gutierrez and God of the Oppressed by Cone. It is awesome. Shows how interhuman justice is the main theme of the bible, from the exodus, psalms, prophets, gospels, the definition of righteousness in the epistles and revelations. On a sidenote, Jose Miranda is spanish and the spanish word for righteousness in the new testament is "justicia" which is justice. Many english speaking christians read about righteousness and presume personal piety is the main theme of the NT instead of justice. Big problem in christianity between the personal pietists and social gospel wings which could be resolved if we rightly defined "righteousness" and understood it as justice. Being and the Messiah is also a great book by Dr. Jose Miranda.

This is an excellent English translation of Religion Professor Jose P. Miranda's work originally written in Spanish. The translation is published by Orbis Books of Maryknoll. Miranda's writing is to explain aspects of First Century Christianity using modern terminology, thereby making it relevant. He cites Marx expressly indicating that his writings were to restore the values of First Century Christianity. This view is at variance with the common view. Miranda thoroughly documents his position from the original writings. Prof. Miranda writes in an engaging style intended to persuade by providing masses of evidence.

Great book...really needed today. Very Biblcal.

Not a fast read. Reads like a text book. Not something you want to take the the doctor's office to read while you are in the waiting room. You need a quiet place and it helps to have a bible near you to refer to. Having said all that, it's worth reading.

I picked this book up on a whim several years ago and read through it once and it altered my Biblical paradigm quite a bit (although that shift lacked the substance necessary to speak in anything but generalities). I have recently revisited it and studied it more in depth and am convinced that this book nails down what is so radical about Biblical faith. It brings it back down to earth and reveals how relevant, and necessary, this faith is in the world.Contrary to the title, the book is not about how Marxism is Biblically justifiable nor is it to say that the Bible is really Marxist. While there are similarities in social outlook, the two do not become one.This book makes the claim that the essence of the faith in Yahweh is rooted in justice to the oppressed. As I work with the homeless in my community, my idea of the essence of the Biblical faith has also been radically altered. My experience coincides with what he says in this book.While other faiths may have been metaphysically similar and other faiths may have been 'religious', the Hebrews were called to something radically new -- a faith that impels them to seek justice for those who have formerly not had a voice.The book reads like a textbook and is thick (and I mean thick) with exegesis. It is rooted directly in the author's work in his native country with the poor. Reading Scripture through the lens of the poor and from a non-Western filter leads to a radical reading of the Bible.His exegesis on faith, justice and law is remarkable and should be read and digested. Even if one doesn't agree with what he says, what he says (and many other 'Liberation Theologians' from countries other than that of the West) needs to be heard. This is a good place to start.Update: I still revisit this book almost ten years after this review was written. This book turned me on to the prophets as something more than just fortune tellers (which is traditionally, it seems, how they are understood...that or a bunch of downers...). If I had one critique it would be that this work rises and falls on the Documentary Hypothesis. I don't have the background to analyze how it holds up in light of modifications to the theory as he understood it but it is significant as he consistenly uses it in his argumentation.I've seen varying critiques of this book, some of which reveal, as Walter Brueggemann calls it, the 'royal consciousness' of many churchified folks. It's not easy to see the water in which you swim.That being said, the book is still an eye opener as to how easy it is to dilute meaning over time in the light of different cultures. From the original use of a term to its development over time through the Septuagint and into the New Testament and into a Church rooted in a more 'western' culture, his effort in trying to determine actual meaning in context is well worth the adventure.

I purchased this book for a religious studies class I was taking. It is interesting to ready. A little hard to follow especially with the language. I had to read some passages more than a few times to understand what was going on. But the content was incorporated very well with the other reading material that was assigned with this book. Very interesting.

This is a fine book, with definitions to less-familiar terms in footnotes. A bit of biography of the author is included (apparently quite the rake)! This is an enlightening part of my recent scholarship into Euro-Jewish history.

My first reading of Marlowe's work. Look forward to reading his other works.

ok but not as good as initially hoped it would be

Great story if you are up on you Shakespearean English. If not, it is very difficult to follow. If it came with a modern English translation it would be much better. Getting the Shakespearean "flavor" is one thing but it needs to be readable.

Subpar cover design. Looks thrown together.Materials are poor. What do doves and a tree have to do with the Jew of Malta?

I can't quite place this play of Marlowe's up there with "Dr. Faustus," "Edward II," "Dido Queen of Carthage," or "Massacre At Paris." But still, it is a good play.We meet Barabas. We see that his financial resources are more important to him than his spiritual values. But he does have a daughter named Abigail who he loves. (We can guess that Barabas is a widower since Abigail's mother never appears.) Well, the governor of Malta (Ferneze) seizes Baraba's wealth to pay tribute to Calymath and the Turks. (And on top of that Barabas's house is to be turned into a convent.) And at this point, we can feel sympathy for Barabas.But all is not lost. His daughter Abigail works her way into her father's house and is able to retrieve a nice amount of wealth for her father. Well, Ferneze learns that even paying tribute to the Turks may not be enough to keep Malta safe. Moving on, we might sympathize with Barabas when Lodowick (the son of Ferneze who seized Barabas's wealth) wants Abigail. And after some double talk, Barabas arranges for Lodowick to fight Matthias. This is where things start to shift. Abigail loves Mathias and is repulsed. (We also know that Mathias did nothing to Barabas.) Our sympathy for Barabas starts to diminish. The repulsed Abigail converts to Christianity and becomes a nun.Barabas furthers his descent into evil when (with the help of the vile Ithamore) he poisons not only his daughter Abigail, but the entire group of nuns. As horrible as this was, Marlowe adds an on stage event to emphasize how evil Barabas has grown. He murders a Friar and frames another. (And at this point, if we had any sympathy for Barabas, it's gone now.)Well, things start to turn. With some convincing, Ithamore decides he knows enough about Barabas to choke some money out of him. (Or he will tell.) Barabas is frightened, but should he be surprised? When you engage in foul games of this sort, how honorable can your accomplices be? Barabas manages to poison Ithamore and his 2 friends, but not before Ferneze learns of Barabas's crimes.But Barabas has another card to play. He betrays Malta and allows Calymath and his forces in. Ferneze is taken prisoner and Barabas is made governor of the town. But Barabas realizes that he will not last long if he is the governor of an area that hates him. It would seem he is out of cards to play. But his ambition can not cease. He makes a deal with Ferneze to kill Calymath, but Ferneze flips the tables, and Barabas is finally defeated.While better Marlowe certainly exists, this is still a good play. Barabas's technique of double talk was one that Shakespeare would eventually make use of. If you love Blue Dog, as I do, and you order one of these every year, as I do, you are bound to be satisfied and pleased. This year I've just rehomed a dog in need who looks very like Blue Dog. Her name is True; her nickname is TBD. True Blue Dog.

Over two decades ago, my then two young daughters and I made the first of many trips to New Orleans when we lived in Pensacola. As we strolled along, we passed a small, unassuming gallery and I immediately stopped. There, propped up in the window, was a painting of a dog - a blue dog. I loved him immediately and have ever since. So it follows that I love the cards - and have for years. A recent review stated in part that no one in New Orleans liked this icon and the paintings are only fodder for tourists. Now, there is a generalization if there ever was one and thus, like all generalizations (including this one?)not worth considering. The Blue Dog is here to tease out a smile from those of us who stop and look and that's enough.

I am so happy I can still purchase these wall calendars! So sorry George Rodrigue passed but these still live on in his memory. I have been a "Blue Dog" fan for more years than I can count. I just lost my "Blue Dog", Chance, an Australian Cattle Dog, aka Blue Heeler. I love these pictures that Mr. Rodrigue had painted as they had captured my dog's personality so well. Thank you for letting me still share in the artwork!! I truly Love this calendar.

Who doesn't love Blue Dog??? I am a fan from way back when and love that I have a great affordable item to share with my kids. The printing is perfect and the layout great. Perfect calendar to brighten up a space, celebrate my Louisiana heritage and have great prints for keepsakes later on. I bought several and all love them!Thank you so much for offering these!

Bought used it was good enough the spine was a little riped and scuffs all over but only could tell if look in light. It was marked as very good condition. For $6 its still good the inside looked new. I gave to my 5 year old son so its a pretty good buy since there's a chance he might tear it. I like the blue dog cause he's cute. I like my own made up story about him instead of how he actually became the blue dog. I seen his paintings on a show called auction hunters they found some in a storage unit and I just had to have a blue dog book.

Originally noticed a fellow employee had this on their cubicle wall and it stopped me in my tracks. The colors are so vivid and beautiful and of course, the "subject" is delightfully amusing (believe I was told the dog belongs to the artist). Since my daughter owns a Corgi I rarely pass up anything for a gift for her, Corgi-related, so this was a birthday gift for her. She loved it, as do I. I suggest that one consider purchasing this,saving the various pages and then framing them as a wonderful grouping. As a professional decorator, these would excel as a theme for a child's bedroom. Get it. You won't be disappointed.

I'm not even a pet owner but can't resist a Blue Dog calendar. This one is my second. I love the whimsical artistry, the bright colors and also the overall quality. I expect I'll be buying one as long as they keep making them.

About the Author

John D. Anderson, Jr., was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on October 1, 1937. He attended the University of Florida, graduating in 1959 with high honors and a Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering Degree. From 1959 to 1962, he was a Lieutenant and Task Scientist at the Aerospace Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. From 1962 to 1966, he attended the Ohio State University under the National Science Foundation and NASA Fellowships, graduating with a PhD in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering. In 1966, he joined the U.S. Naval Ordnance Laboratory as Chief of the Hypersonics Group. In 1973, he became Chairman of the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland, and since 1980 has been Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland. In 1982, he was designated a Distinguished Scholar/Teacher by the University. During 1986â€“1987, while on sabbatical from the University, Dr. Anderson occupied the Charles Lindbergh Chair at the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution. He continued with the Air and Space Museum one day each week as their Special Assistant for Aerodynamics, doing research and writing on the History of Aerodynamics. In addition to his position as Professor of Aerospace Engineering, in 1993, he was made a full faculty member of the Committee for the History and Philosophy of Science and in 1996 an affiliate member of the History Department at the University of Maryland. In 1996, he became the Glenn L. Martin Distinguished Professor for Education in Aerospace Engineering. In 1999, he retired from the University of Maryland and was appointed Professor Emeritus. He is currently the Curator for Aerodynamics at the National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution.

Anderson always writes a good book and this is no exception. It is an excellent book for Aircraft performance and design. He walks you through some nice examples to help you understand aircraft performance and I especially like how he reworks some equations to give you a different perspective of the major variables contributing to the given parameters. The last chapters have a nice example of a conceptual aircraft build-up with some details. His identification of the "7 pivot points" of aircraft conceptual design and optimization is a great foundation for anyone interested in aircraft design. This book always sits open at my desk and gets just as much use at Shevell and Raymer.

This is a well-written book that is excellent for use in an introductory course for aerodynamics or other aviation-related engineering courses of that sort. The book itself is very user-friendly and contains a variety of basic definitions and concepts, as well as a few mathematical analysis word problems. I highly recommend this for any engineering students who plan on working in the aviation field.

This was the first book dedicated to aircraft performance that I bought, back in 2001, and I think it presented the topics in a clear fashion. However, at over $150, this book is now a poor, poor value. There are probably many books that cover the same material at a much lower cost and have a more durable book binding.

This book is great! It really explains things well and the notation is surprisingly easy to understand! Pictures and diagrams are very good!

Any student who has read through this textbook and tried to understand the derivations and derive the equations presented will realize that Anderson's forte is history more than engineering. The text is well written and interesting to read since Anderson gives a good historical background to each concept but Anderson's explanations are sometimes questionable and there are many conceptual and formula errors. The book does have good figures and presents a lot of good data but for students trying to learn aircraft performance for the first time, there are better textbooks out there. I am currently a PhD student in Aerospace Engineering at Georgia Tech studying for the qualifying exam. I was studying from this textbook but found that it was difficult to master the concepts to my professor's expectations based on what Anderson has presented. I recently aquired "Mechanics of Flight" by Warren Phillips which is much better at presenting the same material and is much more exhaustively researched from an analytical point of view. It is also much cheaper with twice the content so I would recommend it over Anderson's "Aircraft Performance and Design."
