Had to purchase for English Lit. Good book for the money. Hard to read...

While Middle English literature is/was/will be dominated by Chaucer, he was not the only major author of his time. What set Chaucer apart from his many contemporaries was an ironic distance from his material, a strong sense of himself as working within a larger European tradition, and a keen eye for what would later become realism. Outside of Chaucer, the prevailing naivete of his contemporaries is downright depressing, and one wonders if human beings evolved some extra part of their brain after his glorious rescue of the language.But let me attempt to be fair. Chaucer DID have several worthy contemporaries. One of them (who was at least his artistic equal and probably his better) was the Pearl Poet. The other was John Gower. Gower's poetry lacks a lot of the material that a modern reader will find compelling (humor and humanity, for instance) and offers instead moral improvement in the form of translated fables. As far as poetic artistry goes, Gower was a better metricist than Chaucer, and one can feel the smoothness of each line that, while lacking that particular Chaucerian clangor, is a virtue in itself. But material-wise, many readers (other than Medievalists--and even they may need to prop their eyelids open) will just find Gower dull.To some degree, Gower has simply not stood the test of time. Out of all of his works, we only read the Confessio now--his other French and Latin works have, for the most part, been forgotten. Moreover, the Confessio's moralistic tales do not always seem relevant to the current time. Need a piece of literature be relevant or applicable to life in order to be studied and written about? Certainly not, but if anything more is to be done with it (such as keeping it on one's shelf to be read in times of existential trouble, or simply to be read for pleasure), then it should not feel as dated as Gower does. His work, to a large degree, has perished, and one gets the sense of reading some "old, dead white guy" as opposed to hearing a living voice.It's always hard judging a book like Gower's, which was written such a long time ago for such a different milieu, on the terms of works that surpassed his own in the realm of imaginative literature. It is my opinion that what wisdom can be gained by reading the Confessio might more readily be gained (in greater abundance and profundity, no less) from reading The Canterbury Tales, or Troilus and Criseyde, or Gawain and the Green Knight, or Pearl, or the Parliament of Fowls, and so on. If you're a newcomer to Middle English lit, you may want to avoid Gower for now, and pick up one of the aforementioned texts.

If you are experienced at all in Greenhouses this book is NOT FOR YOU, don't waste your money. If you are looking for something to help you dip your toe into the waters, looking to figure out the very basics in short, straight to the point ways, this IS FOR YOU. I would also like to note, this book is only 100 pages and is in a decently sized font with plenty of pictures and a few helpful tables to help determine what type of greenhouse is right for you. It's a good place to start your research.

I’m new to greenhouse gardening and I love it love it love it! Well outlined, easy to understand and contains a lot of useful examples to grow.

This book covers everything you need to know to get started with your own greenhouse. The instructions on how to grow different vegetables in a greenhouse have been particular useful for me.

This book was very helpful with the basics of available greenhouse choices and systems. It was a helpful review for me, too, and gave me some new ideas to decrease maintenance costs.

I found nothing in this book that couldn't be found in the various advertiseents from greenhouse supply or gardening/seed catalogs. Bought it along with the Black and Decker greenhouse book (for just a few pennies more...) and the Black and Decker book is a far, far better choice.

Well written and thought out book. Really enjoyed reading it.

The author does a great job at writing concise information on a topic and covering relative aspects. As a gardener interested in having a greenhouse I found the book educational and informative. Although our focus is more on building our greenhouse, the author covers the pros and cons of each method of obtaining one whether you choose to buy a pre built or build your own. Each type and material is broken down and explained well. At each step different options are explored as well as the pros and cons of each, from the most to the least expensive. This format continues throughout the book as the author leads us through the many benefits of having a greenhouse and the best plants to grow in it. The book wraps up with recommendations on maintenance and how to incorporate hydroponics in your greenhouse, which I felt was a perfect ending that left me wanting to get going on our greenhouse project. Outside of the greenhouse structure itself, the highlight of this book for me was the chapter "How to grow fruits in a greenhouse". Growing a small citrus tree would be a dream and if we could protect the dwarf peach trees from our late spring frosts - I would be a very happy gardener! I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about a greenhouse and more.

First, I'm a beach girl. I grew up and lived as an adult in mainly coastal states. Even when I lived in Colorado for a few short years I didn't spend nearly as much time in the mountains as I did at the beach. With that said, Ms. Barnett's book The Road to Paradise transported me to the serene beauty of Mount Rainier, a place to my knowledge I've never been before, and I now want to go. Her word pictures completely immersed me into the beauty and sounds of God's creation.Margie was a hoot! She's grown up in polite society, determined to break away from the stereotype of a delicate woman she used her father's connections she gets a job working with the forest rangers. She does not shy away from anything even a rat who decides to take up residence in her cabin.Ford was a hero who clearly did not want a woman invading his mountain, yet he learned that Margie wasn't a push over and that she would pull her own weight. While they might have disagreed here and there, they unite quickly on keeping a ski lodge out of the mountain.My Bottom Line:This was a beautifully written book filled with sights and sounds of Mount Rainier. Karen Barnett wove scripture in an out of the story creating a visual experience of God's creation. There is a sweet budding romance that both Margie and Ford attempt to avoid. Carmichael's determination for said ski lodge keeps the plot hopping and the reader riveted. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and am anxious to read the second.

Kurson has taken his readers on both underwater and space adventures, all with riveting and compelling style. But as I read Rocket Men, I realized that the real journey Kurson was taking us on, perhaps even unwittingly, was into our own subconscious--into the question of what makes us all, in some measure or another, strive to explore against all odds of success, and often at great sacrifice, unchartered terrains. As I learned about Borman, Lovell and Anders, and their bravery, determination and devotion, I was left wondering what I would sacrifice for the chance to see my world from the outside looking in, and whether I would ultimately have the courage to do so.

Robert Kurson's excellent look at the 1968 voyage of Apollo 8, "Rocket Men: The Daring Odyssey of Apollo 8", has already received excellent reviews on Amazon, so I can add very little. However, I will say that the writing is low-key but compelling as Kurson writes about the politics, the people, and the history of the United States space program. He also details the race - what we knew was happening - between the US and the USSR. The Soviet launch of a moon rocket forced the United States to put forward the Apollo 8 flight well before schedule, so we could go to the moon and circle it. Not actually land - that came later - but to circle it. Even though I know the turnout, I really kept expecting things to fail spectacularly.This is a book for any armchair historian and/or science junkie. I also think it would make a great Audible book and I've already preordered the Audible version at the good price of $14.

I just finished “Rocket Men”. It is a rare thing for me to sit and read a book in a few days but that is what I did with this wonderful book. I have read a lot of books about the space program and even about Apollo 8 to the point that I was not finding anything new or interesting anymore. However, "Rocket Men" is like a whole new story of Apollo 8 and I especially loved the new things I learned from it such as the story behind the picture of the execution from Vietnam, Bobby Kennedy, and other such tidbits that spiced up the adventure of Apollo 8. Telling the story of the three wives was intriguing. I had never read about Lovell’s mistake with the navigation. After all the space books I have read I can honestly say that this is absolutely one of the very best ever produced.

The Big Hero 6 manga is based off the hit movie Big Hero 6 and it should be pointed out there are a lot of differences between the movie and the manga.Without spoiling the storyline for you, the readers, here are some differences:the manga shows Hiro looking much younger than his fourteen years and is a lot less mature than his movie counterpart. He is very shy and tries to cover that shyness by being a brat.The storyline for volume one focuses more the relationship between Tadashi and Hiro, showing bits and pieces of their past and has extra chapter as to why Tadashi built Baymax.Callaghan appears to look much younger and more handsome in this manga than his movie counterpart.The characters display much more emotion and are shown to have more flaws than they had in the movie.All in all, volume one of Big Hero 6 is a great start for a great new series for both fans and newcomers alike!

This story is so cute, I'm waiting on the second one now. I'd recommend this story to Danny who wants so see a different approach to the Big Hero 6 movie. Although before anyone buys this for a kid please be aware of the following:It's a "manga", which is different from english/American graphic novels, so that means your read from right to left. (I saw some reviews complaining about this)It's in black and white, (Yay imagination ^^ )The story follows along the same timeline of the movie but it has a 'different' approach to everything, including introducing the characters.

The product came in perfect condition and very timely. The issue I have is they changed the story but in very not good way. Like Hiro is uncomfortably attached to his brother and they made Callahan’s daughter to a child, so they’re using an actual child for their dangerous experiments. Those are my first two big issues with it but there really isn’t much to say positive about it in general.

A really good read. This manga is similar to the movie but has its own differences, twists and turns which makes it stand apart. Give it a shot!

There were many things about the plot which were changed in the book that I though were stupid, created unnessicary plot holes, and made the characters less likeble.

If your a fan of the movie Big Hero 6 then this is for you!! the story here is a bit different from the movies and has a small special feature on how and why Tadashi decides to create Baymax,while Hiro here looks younger and is really stubborn which makes him cuter.i cried a bit while reading it even though im a teenager but im a huge fan of the movie,cant wait next book to come out which hopefully will be soon.

I bought this for my daughter for her 12th birthday. She absolutely LOVES this story and this way of storytelling. Super excited for #2 to come out in the fall.

Adorable alternate version of the Big Hero 6 story. More backstory of Hiro and Tadashi's relationship growing up,and VERY different circumstances around Tadashi's "death". Eager to read the next part.
