I probably looked at 8 books on the Loire chateuaxs, and this was the best. Great photographs, laid out well, great information on each of the castles/chateauxs, lots of photos of the inside decoration and furniture. This book gave me a better understanding of the landscaping around the castles as well. If you are planning to visit the Loire valley, and you are trying to decide which castles to visit, this book is a must. It is also and excellent armchair-traveller/coffee-table book.

Beautiful as a coffee table book and as research for possible vacation destinations.

Entering a whole unfamiliar culture by reading a good story that takes place in this culture is nothing less than an adventure. This takes place in the middle East and is a touching story of a family enduring serious hardships while following all the rules that are required by their culture. When things don't always work out the way that is acceptable, there are actually traditional underground practices that some will resort to. For their survival, the family in this story resorted to one of these, turning their youngest daughter into a Bacha Posh. Do you know what a "Bacha Posh" is? If you have never heard of it, please read and learn what does take place in some cultures, how it helps the family in many ways and the Psychiological effects it has and leaves on the child in the end. The story moves well and keeps a fascinating interest going.

This is the 3rd of her series I have now read. I've learned a great deal, and now have insight when the news reports the various glossed-overissues of a young girl being kidnapped/given by family to a war lord. or forced to take the role of a boy (men rule society). My heart goes out to these female children/women and their families. I, unfortunately, do not see their customs changing in our lifetimes.

This book is so incredibly thoughtful and well written. The subject matter is very mature, however Nadia has framed it in a way to be very readable for a young reader. Percect book for a mother daughter book club as it is thought provoking, heartfelt, and smart. I can't wait to read The Pearl Thay Broke Its Shell as a follow up.

Guess I didnâ€™t realize this was young adult fiction. My fault. Good story for 11-14 year olds. Would make for great discussions.

I really loved The Pearl that Broke Its Shell, and I believe One Half from the East really took me back.

An easy read which gives a great insight into a Afghanistan culture.

Great subject,appropriate for readers age 8and up.

Love the author. Loved each book she has so far written and published.

The late King Hussein of Jordan was the favorite Arab ruler of both Israeli and other Western leaders, often referred to affectionately as the PLK (plucky little king). Professor Shlaim has written a massive, engrossing, and provocative biography of Hussein that is likely to engender controversy, because it is not a balanced work. Shlaim is a strong admirer of Hussein, and he is highly critical of most Israeli politicians, particularly in their dealings with Hussein. Still, this isnâ€™t a hagiography; Shlaim views Hussein as a man constantly forced to reconcile his primary goal, the preservation of the Hashemite dynasty, with the aims of Arabâ€”particularly Palestinianâ€”nationalists. This tension led to his disastrous decision to intervene in the Six Day War and the loss of the West Bank to Israel. The core of the book examines Husseinâ€™s frequent meetings with Israelis after that war, as he sought peace at great personal risk. Hussein is described as flexible and willing to compromise, while Israelis are seen as rigid and consistently devoted to territorial expansion. A truly extrodinary account of every detail of King Hussien's lifelong quest for a place for his kingdom at the table of respected nations of the world - primarily by pushing for peace in his region at any cost (most often through secret contact with his Israeli nemeses). He was not without errors in this quest, and he benefitted personally ($$) probably more than he should have, but this is the story of an exceptional person on an extrodinary journey who regularly showed more character than either his Isreali or American counterparts. This is the striking aspect of the book -- the lack of good faith (or even honesty) on the part of the leaders of Isreal and USA. It makes an American with an open mind a little uncomfortable with the actions of our leaders - congressional, but also presidents. BUT, the book is as detailed as it could be and focuses on the quest, the policies, and the political experience of this fine man, this amazing king.

I preferred the bio of Queen Noor to get a feel for the king's life, personality, diplomatic efforts, and Near Eastern problems.The Near East has, for past 80 years, been a total mess and impossible for one man to solve. Read this book onlyt if you are really, reallyinto Near East politics.

While history is, on one level, facts, there are always different perspectives from which those facts are viewed. It is worthwhile reading many perspectives to gain a better understanding of events.This book portrays the late King Hussein's quest for peace and his desire to preserve the Hashemite dynasty. It follows his life from a young boy who witnesses the horrific murder of his beloved grandfather, to his own death after a long reign on the throne of Jordan.I was interested in reading of familiar events from a different perspective than the one I got from the media in South Africa when they were taking place. However, there were times when I found the writing style difficult to follow and there was a sense of ploughing my way through the book in parts. If I had not already been fascinated by the land and people of Jordan I may well not have finished the book; although it was well worth reading right to the end.

Hussein's life was principled on the premise that " King Hussein was fundamentally and structurally a client king ...for all practical purposes the Hashemite legacy inherited from his grandfather was one of continuing dependence on the West." P.154His wide recognition, acclaim and complexity were due to " the principle of balancing applied at all levels: the inter -Arab, the regional, (domestic) and the global...this meant balancing between Arab and conservatives and Arab radicals, between the Arab world on the one hand and Israel on the other, and the global level between the West and the Soviet bloc...The survival of the Hashemite dynastic interests were paramount (and) the guiding principle behind his foreign policy, the key to constant shits and maneuvers , to all the alliances and realignments " P.212With these two elements as the deciding factors in Hussein's life, Avi Shlaim delivers a superb biography that is well written, researched, revealing, passionate and to a great extent objective.Regardless if one agrees or not with the King's inherited role, he was able to save his dynasty and country.Although King Hussein's life revolved on the previous mentioned principles, not all of the King's actions can be aligned with those principles if one takes a simplistic view of those actions without serious reflection and reading between the lines. Avi Shlaim does an excellent job on analyzing the King and his actions from the day he reached the thrown until the last moments on his deathbed.For example, when Iraq invaded Kuwait, the King sided with Iraq, which is contradictory to King's " balancing principle." However, after reading the author's analysis and the foreign/domestic challenges facing the King, the King through careful policies and outstanding foresight was able to save his country and dynasty from Iraq, Israel and from domestic upheavals.Even though the King had a "special" relationship with Israel for many reasons, which are explored in the book, the King realized the only way to have the support of Washington was through Israel. This is revealed when King Hussein gave Bush I a memo that stated in part, in his (the king's) judgment the Arab-Israeli conflict was not a foreign policy for the US but rather a domestic US issue due to the domestic influences in the US on the issue. P 478 Although not comprehensible to the King, this an obstacle to peace in the region.Another example is when President Clinton at the request of King Hussein was unable to sway congress to forgive Jordan's debt to the US. Clinton in turn asked for the help of Rabin. " Yes Mr. President," replied Rabin slowly we will do our best. To the Jordanians present at this brief exchange provided a remarkable demonstration of the political clout wielded by Israel and its friends on Capitol Hill" p 545During the peace negotiations with Israel, King Hussein was very calculating with extreme foresight, Unlike Arafat who in my judgment was incompetent to lead his people's cause and prone to miscalculation and countless poor judgments before and after the peace treaty. To Israel's satisfaction, Arafat committed a huge blunder by going behind the King's back to negotiate with Israel a separate peace treaty with Israel.King Hussein, in his correct judgment believed the agreement Arafat reached with Israel was vague, imprecise, and that substantive issues (Jerusalem, borders, refugees) were not addressed in the accord but left for future negotiations. " No one with any sense would sign a treaty first and discuss its technical clauses afterwards." P 533 King Hussein told Rabin when he asked the King to follow in the footsteps of the Peace treaty reached with the PLO.These are some of the examples, perhaps not the most important, but nevertheless revealing on why I thought this an outstanding book on the life of King Hussein.

Love this story knowing how much this king suffered to keep this kingdom up

Remembering the love of the Jordanians for their leader, this book relates many of the triumphs of his time as King of Jordan. He accepted hundreds/thousands of Palestinian refugees from their homeland in Palestine/Israel when the Israeli govt relieved them of their right to live in their own land.

Always admired King Hussein and reading this book made me realize even more what a great loss we suffered with his death.

Best Historical Scholarly Book on the History of Jordan and the Hashemite Dynasty in Jordan. Recommend: The King's Council by Jack O'Connel which is less scholarly but still a good read and some good new insights.

A book by a friend but a fantastic book nonetheless. Having had a great debut there was a lot of live up to ... and I was all ready to be more critical of PT. However the book won me over with ease.If I was to compare it to anything it would be to the Empire Strikes Back (in line with the contemporary analogies that PT has used in the series). There is a lot of setup happening and lot of complex things going on with respect to time and space. It is a very entertaining read, with a lot of content that pushes the story along at full speed.At the end of it all we are left with some answers but a lot of questions, waiting with bated breath for the next installment of this story. Knowing PT's committed and disciplined approach I am sure we will not have to wait long.* The review is as written on my Goodreads page.

I am really into this series. It has been a highly original and entertaining story. It's four stars is based on the story alone (I say this because the writing style is good, not exceptional, but definitely good, and I think this author's style will definitely improve and evolve). It's extremely well thought out and plotted. There are so many ways that this could have been a disaster (time-travel, time-stoppage, a place outside of place - which I'm still trying to wrap my head around but somehow Hylton makes it work) but not once was I confused or in disbelief. I can't wait to get to Book 3!

I'm a huge book worm. I've always got a book on hand, so I forget the ones that don't stand out fairly quickly after I've finished one. This series has always stood out. I waited around for the second book just like I'll be waiting on the third. Kept me on the edge of my seat!! Definitely recommend

It's a rare treat to find a story this original! No recycled vampires and zombies here. P. T. Hylton scares us with monsters we've never met, all homegrown in his fertile imagination. He creeps us out in a world we've never been to, "A Place Without Shadows." It's hard to give this book its due without giving away its secrets. And there are secrets aplenty in this sequel. Readers of "Regulation 19" will discover that what happened in Rook Mountain was just the tip of the iceberg. It's a riveting plot, enlivened by believable and likeable characters. I loved the ending and can't wait to read the conclusion of this series next spring.

A once-man named Zed and his alien benefactors. normal and deep time, and their denizens. And people in the middle.

I enjoyed reading this book as well as the first one in the series. Could hardly put down. Great original supernatural type story !

Very enjoyable sequel to Regulation 19. Reminiscent of Stephen King. Good pacing and interesting ideas.

I really enjoyed how this book took a new direction than the first one but while still logically continuing the story from the first book. Well done!

The content of this illustrated book is very good, following the treasured Dark Tower story of Stephen King. Unfortunately, there are pages I can't read because the pages are too small on my Android tablet. Those I can read are wonderful. There is no sizing ability that I can find for the pages except for font size, which has no effect on images such as these.I tried to bring this book up on my computer with the Kindle app thinking it might be large enough to read all the pages, however, I simply received an error saying it couldn't load this format. It's possible that an authentic Kindle tablet would allow re-sizing, however I can't verify that.I love the Dark Tower story well enough that I don't regret purchasing these books but it would be helpful if all the pages were readable.

We faithful readers of the Dark Tower books have always wondered about the battle of Jericho Hill, which was mentioned many times in the novels but never gone into in depth. What we did know was that this was a climactic battle, and the forces of evil defeated the dedicated band of gunslingers, leaving only Roland to survive. There was also mention of the horn of Arthur Eld, without more explanation. This excellent graphic novel fills in the details of this sad portion of the Dark Tower saga. Once again we have excellent scripting and tremendous artistry combined to present to the reader a complete and engrossing book, even if we are not pleased with how the plot goes. It's compelling and, as usual with these works, the reader is hooked from the first page and just goes through the whole book in one sitting. It's a work that should satisfy even the most rabid King fan, and it gives us the background knowledge to more fully understand the Dark Tower mythology. I assumed that this book would take us to the beginning of the first Dark Tower novel, but I see now that is not the case. That being said, prepare for further volumes in this timeless tale that will eventually take us to when "the man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed".

I pre-ordered this 5 months before it was available for sale. As soon as I received it I opened my Amazon package and read the whole thing. I thought this was another great chapter of the Dark Tower saga. As the entire DT story goes it's not the typical western, sci-fi, adventure, action, drama, so on type of story and it's best attributes are it's flawed characters, deep seeded story line, the underlying community feeling, gritty reality, and fearless dives into the tumultuous world of Mid-World. This chapter did not disappoint in the least. I immediately pre-ordered the next hardcover bound edition to come out in January 2011 and can't wait to see it's interpretation and continuation of the story. I'm just waiting for the DT graphic novel that ends with the words "the man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed" to truly cap off a great adventure!

Very good but not the same as the books I read so long ago. Still a fun read. Reread all these after seeing the movie. I didn't like the movie. These books would be very difficult to put on screen without losing the story. The ending of the book seemed more of a cop out than a real ending but it is Mr. King's story to do with as he wishes.

As a huge fan of the Dark Tower books, I was very interested in this 'prequel'. Understanding that it is a graphic novel, and that it is based on King's characters--but not written by King--it dealt with the settings, story, and characters well enough. I'll certainly be ready volume 2.

Another wonderful read on the continuing journey of Roland and his get, very sad ending, but the faithful reader knows what is in store for those that wronged him!!!

it gives us the background knowledge to more fully understand the Dark Tower mythology, particularly the Battle of Jericho which has many references throughout the series but little explanation until now. An emotional journey that fills in the details of this sad part of the D.T. Saga

If you've read The Dark Tower series, the events of this prequel comic series will entice you. I'm ready to journey with Roland again.
