I have never done any underwater photography before but when I got the chance to snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef, I decided to dip my foot in the water and record some sea life. The book really helped with the basics of getting the photos and with post production. I came away with photos I was happy with. The only problem was the sea temperature which meant I couldn't spend as much time in the water as I would have liked.

Good place to start if you are considering a new hobby of underwater photography. After reading this, I went in another direction, but this was interesting and helpful.

Extremley easy to read. Has lots of pictures demonstrating the effects of f-stops, ISO speed, and aperture in UW photography. Good guide for developing UW photography techniques. Reading it a second time as we speak. Highly recommended for beginner through advanced photographer.

A basic book that is very good for beginners. If you are experienced there are a few good tips, etc. but nothing that you probably don't know or haven't experienced.

This is a very good book! the book is very easy to follow with detail explanation and good examples. i finished this book before my last diving trip, and brought home beautiful photos form the trip. just bought another one for my diver friend.

Very helpful for beginners but also great for advanced photographers. Maria Munn is also good at writing and it makes for an interesting book.

I just finished reading Ghost wave and I must tell you that I am disappointedâ€¦â€¦..that itâ€™s FINISHED. What the hell am I to do now? I certainly donâ€™t expect a Ghost Wave 2 in 3D. I was absolutely riveted and this is the only time I was content when the doctor or dentist was late for my appointment. I carried that book everywhere and in the mornings often almost spooned mouthfuls of cereal into my ear. I shed tears in front of my family when I read out loud of Pete Daviâ€™s tragic and last paddled into shore. We cracked up from the ranting of Long and Twiggs as they bobbed among 60 to 70 ft ft waves, â€œI say this is my ski and you can get #$%#@â€.I paused literally spooked to turn the page as you gave a spectacular account of the January 4th Cortez session. My eyes were wide open from Captain Mac Rae's maritime journeys to page 242. You brought me close to the awesomeness Mr. Dixon. The Awesomeness of natureâ€™s deep power and the power of â€˜menâ€. I wonâ€™t say you should be proud because I know you are. â€¦and you should be. THANK YOU CHRIS DIXON for the wonderful work of creative insight. PS. If you ever write about K2 or Everest or anything else that is watery I WILL READ IT.

This book will stay in your personal library. You will want to re-read it over and over. I love a good surf read, but have discovered it to be a narrow genre. Didn't take reading too many books to realize that there are a small number of legendary accounts that get retold in several books (Mark Foo drowning at Mavs, Laird & Brett Lickle's disaster in Maui, etc). Most of these get re-told here. If you've never read them before, they're fun, but otherwise it feels a bit like filler.The highlight is a focus on Cortes Bank and there are some pretty mindblowing descriptions of a pretty amazing place. Makes me want to go out and take a look, though I have no desire to be anywhere near a surfboard when I do. There's a neat recounting of seafaring history and some of the disasters and near-misses out at Bishop Rock, though the imagined expedition of coastal indians going to visit it seems a bit of a stretch.Read it and enjoyed it. Not one that I would avidly recommend unless you're a die-hard surfer.

The book gives a history of the discovery and surfing of the giant waves on Cortes Bank which is 100-miles out in the ocean off San Diego. Cortes Bank rises suddenly from the deep ocean to within 30-feet of the surface. When big wind waves sweep in from the North Pacific, waves with 20 to 30-second periods and heights of 25 feet or more in the open ocean, the observed breaking waves have been 100-feet high or greater. Surfers have been able to ride 50 to 80 foot waves with the help of being towed in by jet skis. As the wave period gets longer, the waves move faster, up to 60 miles per hour.The book also covers other big wave spots such as Jaws in Hawaii and Mavericks in Northern California, and gives a lot of surfing history. It is well written and keeps the reader on the edge of his/her chair.

I realize this book was published 7 years ago and public access and ownership changes with time. I was hoping this book was going to be a good resource for off road trips. Unfortunately, I did not find it to be so in February 2017, specially; for Site 91 (Gleeson / Courtland), it is not Gleeson road that you take off Highway 80 as the map indicates, but you will be fine if you follow the road signs to Gleeson. Many of the dirt roads throughout Gleeson and Cpurtland are posted no trespassing. I never saw any sign of Bornite as the author noted or much mineralogy of interest at all on the mine dumps I visited. The map in the book is so generic and non-specific that it was of little use. Site 102 (Helvetia) was worse, the map shows Helvetia cemetery on the right side of Santa Rita Road - it is in fact on the left side of the road. There was one interesting mine that we visited with lots of copper color in the dumps, you will see it to the right of the road near an abandoned bus two miles or so past the cemetery. Whatever roads existed to other mines in the area are either gated private property or are no longer passable. We started down a pipeline road past the abandoned bus but turned around as the road was so overgrown that it was not passable. Site 94 was not much better, the access road shown on the map in the book at milepost 301 and the one to the south are gated and posted no trespassing. I did not try the third access road. I should have done my research with online topo maps and discussion groups rather than this book - which is what I'd suggest you do. Buyer Beware. I have to wonder if the author actually visited these areas close to when the book was published...

Just got this book and we had luck at the first location we picked. We then tried to go to a nearby site, but had trouble locating it. Due to time constraints we headed back pretty pleased with some beautiful Jasper. A great day in the Jeep with the top down. Weâ€™re in Scottsdale and planning more trips soon to other locations!

This book has a of copyright 2009. For the places that this book covers it seems to do a good job, although I have read that some of the places are not super accurate or over picked, I wish they would come up with an updated edition soon. The paper in the book is nice quality and there is a mixture of black and white and colour pictures as well as maps for each location. The book also offers good general information as well.

Haven't been to Arizona yet but the book is of the same quality as the other Gem Trail books I own. These books have great maps and photos of the sites. With the descriptions the book gives it would be hard to get lost.

Really like "Gem Trails of Arizona" !!! I'm a rock hound, and learned some very interesting things. I didn't know before. Going to check out the Gen Shows in Tucson, as well as others.

My husband an I recently took a trip to Arizona and New Mexico. After using this book for the first time, we were able to find everything that was stated, and in large beautiful quantities. Directions were very good, might have been off a tenth or two, but...you guys did all the work for us! We both loved the results. Our only dilemma was, we didn't have the book for New Mexico!!!! But...I just ordered it.

This book is interesting and somewhat helpful. I purchased the 2001 edition in 2009. Some of the directions and sites were not as given, but that is to be expected. It would be nice if the author had some means of being informed of changes.Some changes that should be of interest to others are: Site 8, pg 32, Desert Roses. There were none to be found even with a walk up to and around the base of Fire Mnt. Site 20: pg 56, Parks Obsidian. Forest Road 141 has been renamed to Government Mountain Road. There is a fence around the "obsidian Tank", but there is no gate and the area is pretty well opened for samples. Site 37, page 102, Winslow petrified wood. Following the dirt road a mile or two after the bridge you will find petrified wood. There are several petrified tree remains off the shoulder of the road, however this is not the colorful petrified wood, but a brownish gray/tan with little if any color.Site 36, page 100, Joseph City Petrified wood appears now to be a trash site. Small pieces of petrified wood and agate can be found, but be careful of the broken bottles and other trash that has been dumped in the area.This is a helpful book for finding some of the minerals that are listed.Gem Trails of Arizona

My son loves buses and he loves this book! It doesn't seem to actually be "for kids" though since there is so much manufacturing information and text. That part seems to be for adults, and I enjoy reading that as my son excitedly examines the pictures. My only complaint (not really) is that it would be great if there were more school buses in here.

I didn't know much about commercial shipping or weather systems when I opened the book; now I not only know more, I care. How does George Michelsen Foy manage to make a container ship's pumps, holds, and consoles (not to mention the physics of how a tropical depression becomes a Category 4 hurricane) so fascinating? Here's how: He starts and ends with El Faro's people, the mates and hands and captain who uncomplainingly do their jobs until they can't do them any more.Some "disaster book" authors tug at the reader's pity or conscience by resorting to inventions and assumptions. Foy doesn't play those tricks. When no one knows exactly what occurred at a particular moment, he reports that no one knows exactly what occurred. When he makes an informed guess, he says "maybe" and "perhaps." He acknowledges the agonizing void at the center of this storyâ€”the "why" that won't ever be answered. And still he keeps you racing through his book, because you HAVE to know what happens to El Faro and her people at the end.

Stories about maritime disasters, airline crashes and similar topics are rarely on my reading list. As a cruising sailor with a lifelong career as an airline pilot Iâ€™ve observed that authors and screenwriters rarely get it right in highly specialized and mostly closed fields where much of the reading public has almost no first-hand experience. But George M.Foy set the hook with his previous title, â€œFinding Northâ€, a very personal, well researched and thoroughly fascinating treatment of the navigational imperative that affects us all. Especially significant to me are his treatment of GPS and what he calls, â€œCybernavâ€â€” automated navigation systemsâ€”how they affect us and at what cost? With â€œRun The Stormâ€ Foy reels me right in. This is anything but your ordinary disaster story. His impressively detailed research uncovers the chain of events that conspired as they usually do, to culminate in the finally unavoidable accident while rarely if ever interjecting the author into the story. He relies on factual data, interviews with credible sources, recorded data, historical weather analysis and an amazing amount of large vessel engineering data, yet the human side shines through in ways that range from ordinary to incredible. And it is, in the end, a story of the human spirit, and human failure on many levels. Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board investigational results give us their probable cause assessments, but Foyâ€™s gradual un-layering of the details puts the reader in the terrifyingly omniscient position of knowing whatâ€™s coming and why, but being unable to shout through the pages to the crew, and the National Weather Service, and the shipping company, to Do Something To Break This Chain! With this work, George M. Foy has also exposed a theme common wherever the conflict between corporate profit and safety clash; the pressure either expressed or implied to serve the bottom line first, the potential for inappropriate compromise and the price to be paid for lack of aggressive independent oversight, all themes that are compelling and common as waves on the sea. I'm a retired U.S. Coast Guard officer and my specialty was marine safety and security. I can say without reservation that I can't see how any author/researcher could improve on Mr. Foy's book. I have read some of the other books on the El Faro's sinking that have taken on a public fascination probably because the incident happened only three years ago. None of the other books can compare. It's not like reading about the loss of a sailing ship on Cape Horn some 169 years ago on her way to the newly discovered California gold fields. Mr. Foy's writing is witness to the fact that he teaches creative writing at New York University. His style, organization, and clarity of writing were joys to this reader. I'm looking forward to Mr. Foy's future works on shipping that I hope he will pen.

I agree with several of the good and the not so good comments people have made about this book. First off, the book is definitely worth the cost and is a good read. Even though I had read through the final NTSB report when it came out and can say there is nothing new in Run the Storm, I still found it hard to put down. The timeline is laid out pretty well, the language is not overly technical, and there is not much bias in regards to conditions that lead up to the disaster. The use of voice transcripts from the recovered ships "black box" were very effective in building the narrative. As for the reason I give this book only 4 stars, the writing could have been edited better. The language at time gets overly flowery like the author bent WAY over backwards to attempt prose when a simple description would have sufficed, and there are sentences that contain several commas and semicolons (as in several of both in a single sentence) that run on for an entire paragraph. That seemed to get worse in the latter half of the book.Glad I bought this book and I can say that last section describing when the ship went down, told almost entirely from the voice transcripts, was downright chilling.

This is an excellent book with brilliant pacing, wonderful detail, real insight, and a compelling, enlightening story to tell about an isolated world that gets little recognition or understanding, despite its essential importance, and the people who inhabit it. It was hard to put down, especially as it gathered pace, and I can recommend it highly. There's a lot of technical detail, but it's balanced by the human side of the story, and the author does an outstanding job of explaining, as well as possible, an ending that is, by its very nature, completely incomprehensible to anyone still alive.
