She is the cofounder and chairman of the Ascend Educational Fund, a college scholarship and mentorship program that assists immigrant students, regardless of their immigration status, ethnicity, or national origin. I'm having a hard time rating this book based upon the content. It's very well written and while I appreciate the biographical nature, I find myself conflicted by the story in and of itself. I would give the writing a 4 and the content a 1. The story drew me in and kept me turning the page but as the story unfolded I found the author to be out of touch with the reality of what it means to follow the law of the land and the consequences of illegal decisions. The sad reality that is seldom discussed surrounding illegal immigration is that someone is to blame and the big bad U.S. Immigration laws are the scape goat for poor decision making. Every.single.country on this planet has immigration laws in place to protect the citizens of said country. You and I might not like or agree with them but just as stealing is a crime, so is entering and working in a foreign country without proper documentation. Period. At no point in this book did I read the author lay the appropriate blame at the feet of her parents. They could have crossed legally into the U.S., made their money, went back home to Mexico and finished building their house and raising their children. Instead the money was squandered, stolen and they were left with nothing. Yes, children of illegal immigrants are innocent but they are victims of their parents lawlessness. Sadly this is a crucial missing element in the authors life story. She continues to perpetuate the deceit by constantly and willfully breaking the law. Did she work hard? Absolutely. Was she academically gifted? Absolutely. Was she smart enough to work at Goldman? Absolutely. Did she come into this job honestly and deserve the job? Nope. You see, all the hard work and dedication means nothing if you lie, cheat, and steal to get your way to the top. The author claims to be a spiritual person yet she expresses no remorse for the web of lies and deceit she weaves. I believe she is missing a key spiritual, biblical element about truthfulness. Proverbs is full of references to those who walk in the light of honesty and truth; Proverbs 12:17 An honest witness tells the truth but a false witness tells lie. Proverbs 12:22 The Lord detest lying lips but he delights in those who are trustworthy.

When her Mom was pregnant with her younger brother Julissa made what seemed to her a relatively reasonable offer. A compromise. She would not kill him but she would take him out and put him in the trash so he would be taken away. Her Mom was not pleased. (Neither was Julissa.) As a teenager, she snuck out to a friend’s party (a party that had to scatter when the police arrived). In high school, she rebelled a bit and dyed her hair red and pierced her tongue. And she had crushes on guys that were completely wrong for her. All while working really hard, getting excellent grades, battling emotional and physical ailments, working to pay for her tuition and rent, and supporting her family. Her hard work paid off and Julissa landed a job as an analyst at Goldman Sachs straight out of college. (She eventually made VP.)This story would have been impressive all by itself but for Julissa there was more. Julissa’s parents brought her to the US when she was 11. Julissa’s parents started a business selling silver and, as most of their clients were American, they lived (for all intents and purposes) in the US. Julissa’s Grandmother raised Julissa and her sisters in Mexico. From the very beginning, the somewhat rebellious Julissa worried her family—and when she tried to give a Playboy magazine to a boy she had a crush on (this at a strict Catholic school) her parents decided to bring her to America. They were determined that Julissa buckle down, not get into trouble, get a great education, and career. There would be no boyfriends or Playboys.And that part of it worked out. Julissa was an amazing student, one of the first students who was allowed to go to a Texas university under House Bill 1403. That, in turn, enabled her to become an executive at Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch and then become a social advocate. It allowed her to meet the man who became her best friend and husband and who, even though their marriage failed, helped her get her green card and then citizenship. It enabled her to support her family and later to bring her little American-born brother to America when the family grew worried about him. It also made her into what we would now call a Dreamer. It meant that Julissa didn’t get a driving license until well into her 20s though she had been driving since she was a teenager. She could not open a bank account. She paid her tuition, rent, utilities, everything in cash. When she had to close down her food stand and find another way to make money, she had to get a fake ID. When she went out with friends, she waited till someone else ordered beer and paid them back. It was a precarious existence. She made it anyway.Her story, at once so normal (I recognized myself in her more than once) and so abnormal and yet always inspiring is definitely worth the read. I say this even though she should (in my opinion) either left out the last several chapters altogether or cut them down considerably. Those chapters deal not so much with her life but with The Issues and with how big a mess the immigration system is. And don’t get me wrong: she makes good points. She explains, for example, that it would take her 20 years to bring her 60-year old Mother over to the United States. But that is not a story of her life. It is a story of a broken immigration system and I read this book for her story. So if I had one minor grumble about this book, that’s it.Other than that though, it is a well-written book about a remarkable young woman. I recommend it.

Julissa's book is raw, honest, and beautifully written. Through her stories she highlights the struggles of being undocumented and ultimately persevering despite the many obstacles that her her status for many years. If you are an immigrant an/or a first-generation American, I wholeheartedly recommend this book. You will smile, laugh, and cry.

This is on the darker side of fantasy novels. It isn't even close to grim dark but if you do have triggers on captivity or violence against women, be aware of it before you start reading.This book focuses on Ryn who is 17 and still rather innocent for her age despite the war torn, starving kingdom around her. That innocence will be torn away from her during the course of the novel as she learns what is and isn't important to her in a deadly game for survival. I very much enjoyed watching her start to transform while still yelling at her to open her eyes and truly see what is happening. Some might find her lack of perception at times unrealistic, as you'd think it would sharpen, not dull when in such circumstances. But when a body is stressed and her mind has taken more blows then it can handle, I can excuse a certain amount of blindness as Ryn tries to cling to certain "truths" to try to hold on to her sanity.What truly fascinated me about this novel is Irrik. A very complex character who is also trapped despite, or because of, his race and power. He made this novel for me. Watching him struggle to find any freedom to do as he desired without making things worse or losing what is left of his soul was a treat. The interactions between Ryn and Irrik were my favorite part.This book was tightly focused on the characters and their roles to play in larger events. This book focuses on one kingdom, but it is clear there is a much bigger empire and this is far from the end. I cannot wait to see where it is going.

I loved the concept of the story itself. It was a good idea. But failed tremendously to capture my attention. I could only read this book a few pages at a time because it felt like it was written by an older person who has no idea what 18-year-olds act like."Holy pancakes" really?hot potatoes? Please stop.The main character is so dense and annoying I had trouble getting through the series and I gave up on the 3rd book. I couldn't deal with one more holy pancakes. the main character doesn't really grow as a person the way I expected her to. she became aware, but that doesn't mean she experienced any growth.I understand the main character is young but with the hardship and loss she's grown with, I doubt very much the naivety and flippant nature would be called for. I feel like she'd have grown up fast. It's one thing to be flawed, but she's a trainwreck.It was refreshing and beyond irritating that she had a modern sarcastic tone. it kept me detached from the book as unbelievable but it also let me into her naive, underdeveloped mind.And I didn't care for the Phaetyn having the Hawaiian language. It would be fitting were they islanders, coastal, sea farers, or at least tropical. They lived in a forest and it just didn't work.I wish it hadn't been as captivating. then I wouldn't have wasted my time and money on it.

It is a must read for fantasy lovers who are looking for intricate characters, a bit of romance, and plot twists of the most delicious kind.I was blessed with an ARC of this precious, and not gonna lie, I went in expecting one thing and got something completely different. Not BAD different, just different. I went in expecting your stereotypical hot dragon shifter and peasant girl chosen one romance story. That, my friends, is barely the tip of the iceberg.Blood Oath follows Ryn a peasant from the outer provinces under a rule of a ruthless king who has led his people to tyrannical starvation. The King's Drae (read: dragon), Irrik is known for following the king's orders with ruthlessness and precision, under an oath that bound him to the king's will many years ago. When Ryn gets mixed up with Drae and mistaken as a rebel, her life is over- or it would be if Irrik hadn't noticed something about Ryn that made him pause and defy the cruel system he has helped enforce.No-no wait, like I said, this isn't a shifter alpha-male romance novel. It is FANTASY! The magical powers/broken lands/rise up type!! You've got your terrible torture, heart-wrenching deceptions, unpredictable deaths, painful betrayals, and yes- some romance for those readers (like me) who just can't do without a bit.For those of you who are wary of love triangles, don't worry this one works- seriously. It's not really even a love triangle but I can't explain without giving anything away.If you're looking for the aforementioned plots, you must read Blood Oath! Ryn is a strong character but can, albeit, be a bit lackluster and naïve for someone going through her specific scenario. She sets her emotions first and brain last which was a bit frustrating. The only other comment I'd like to make is that this series desperately needs at least one other POV, I can totally see why the authors weren't able to in this first book, but going forward I'd love to get Irrik's POV!

Drak! That was a good book. I already loved both authors' previous novels, so I knew I'd enjoy their writing and it didn't let me down. It did, however, surprise me. Blood Oath was much darker than any of their prior books, but just as enthralling. Ryn was a strong lead character and the entire book was written in her narrative. There was a twist that surprised me and another twist that did not, but I could NOT put the book down until I was finished. If you're looking for a light read, this is not it, but if you're looking for a fascinating twist on dystopian fantasy, dragon lore, and a girl fighting to live through mystery and tragedy, you will not be disappointed. Brava, Raye and Kelly!

Excellent book with interesting facts.

I used to work at Pogue's, eat in the restaurants at all their locations and have fond memories of lunches in McAlpin's with the delicious fish sandwiches, chili spaghetti night at Kenwood Pogue's Camargo Room. This was long ago--in a time when I was unwed and pregnant , forced to wear a dime store wedding ring and quit my job after 6 months pregnant. Times have sure changed.

Good book about not famous people of Cincinnati. It was a good, quick read. It is good for a rainy day read.
