There is a very recent book called software and mind (Software and Mind: The Mechanistic Myth and Its Consequences) which lashes out for nearly 1,000 pages at current software and programming education as mind-numbing, rote, and not fit for the human brain, let alone spirit. Anyone who has coded with the "wash on wash off" method knows what the point is.These authors get that, and more. They take the time to describe how memorization destroys the human spirit, let alone the will to go on in programming! A majority of other programming books do what both books warn about: kill the will to go on with just awful tedium. "Learning" data structures, commands, rote algorithms, etc. is about as fun as watching an apple rot.This fine text, still not outdated and a gem, created the DrScheme language out of Scheme (a Lisp descendant functional paradigm language) especially for beginning programmers. The book and online web support (still active in late 2013) include a custom SDK/IDE (programming interface) like a little toolkit window, with a "calculator" that can test structures and algorithms with a fun interface that gently leads you into debugging without creating thoughts of suicide.I train autodidacts with online tutorials and some of the finest programmers I've ever met are self taught. This is a GREAT text for that purpose, because autodidacts are self motivated and don't have Satan the Professor cracking the whip to make them finish. In that frame the text has to be fun, interesting and revelatory or my favorite audience (self learners) just walk away. This is one of the rare ones that does not disappoint!Many authors try to pack their texts with show off garbage for their peers. This text is 180 degrees from that; totally student oriented, and always aware of how NOT to teach programming. The analogies, insights, exercises, pedagogy are wonderfully thorough, while bending over backwards to avoid methods that a rabid chimp could learn, or so rote that one wonders where the macro meta program is that should do this to save human dignity. Highly recommended, both for teachers who care about their students, and my fellow self study buddies.Library Picks reviews only for the benefit of Amazon shoppers and has nothing to do with Amazon, the authors, manufacturers or publishers of the items we review. This is the best book on programming that i have ever read. Though it is centered around the language scheme, it actually explains how any programming language works. The book follows your thought process. You'll find that the answer to the question that just popped up in your head, is infact there in the very next para. I have never seen a book that understands the reader completely as this book does. A must read if you want to understand the basic underlying mechanics of any programming language, and ofcourse a great book to learn scheme as well.

An Amazing book! The book is best for those who have some experience with a programming language. It can be profitably read by a beginner, but you better be prepared to work! You can download free software (DrRacket) specially designed to work with this book. The software is very good at helping students use Scheme. Although it uses Scheme for illustration purposes, the ideas in this book are language independent. Not only is the entire book legally online for free, the 2014 updated second edition is also online for free (although writing on that is still in progress). A great line regarding the beginnings of programming from the first edition is: "Once we know how computers deal with numbers, we can develop simple programs in no time; we just translate common sense into our programming notation." This is the ideal, to be able to translate our human language reasoning into effective computer processes that express our reasoning. It is the heart of good design.

This book opened my eyes. I'd finished a Ph.D. in computer science, and had a decent exposure to quite a few programming languages and paradigms, before coming across this book. I was surprised to start working through this introductory book, and find myself learning new things! The book transformed my approach to programming.From page one, HtDP starts talking about good program design, and gives a methodical approach. Until this, I'd always thought programming books were "here are ten small example programs; go write ten more." That's hardly teaching. But HtDP builds up a straightforward design recipe, to guide programs along. If I get stuck or have a mistake in my program, 90% of the time I realize it's because I strayed from the book's recipe. The approach is language-independent, although some programming environments make it much easier to implement the design recipe; the book provides links to a good (free) Scheme environment, which it uses for its code examples too. (I've come to use that environment day-to-day). My code--in any language--has become much more robust, and when I do have a bug I usually locate it early, thanks to this book.In addition, HtDP made me think about things I'd taken for granted: How is assignment to a variable fundamentally different than assignment to a structure's field? Even, *why* do I use assignment statements in certain situations, instead of choosing a functional approach? How often do my programs actually need the efficiency of imprecise floating-point arithmetic, vs using bignums which totally liberate me from numerical inaccuracy?Although the text is available on line, I cherish my hardcopy. This is a book to first learn programming from, and one to revisit every five years.

About the Author

Received everything mentioned on the back of the 2e box set. The problem with the new rules and new missions booklet seems to be a error with how it was put together there's repeated pages which have been placed in the booklet upside down. To which I have included pictures of the most obvious ones. That's a bit of a letdown as I could have easily gotten the hardcover over the box set, But I had wanted the extras. overall the quality of what i received is great. The art and extras are great to look at, But a bit disappointed with the booklet included.

The book itself does a great job explaining pen and paper role playing, especially if your new to the genre. I was especially impressed with the quality of the GM screen and the decks of cards. While not needed to actually play they really show the effort and care put into the product.Rules are simple enough and do a great job at rewarding you for playing/acting out your role well. The Rulebook alone has tons of amazing art and info fleshing out the world.I wouldn't even consider getting the standard rulebook only. One of the best RPG I've ever played and this box is worderful. Softcover core book, one supplement booklet, GM Screen, 12 dice, four decks of player cards, lots of character sheets.A must have box for a great price.

This is by far one of my favorite rolplaying games, the system is not very complicated but very richfull in choices. Anyone who want to start trying the old pen and papaer RPG's this is a excellent choice for start. The art is pretty nice and the dice and other accesories in this box let you start rigth away your season. I encourage this kind of games for young people becuse improve social skill and improved imagination in the players.

This game has a great concept, based on a comic book named Mouse Guard. The mice are the sentient beings, but they are also the smallest. So you're role playing season to season and how the mice interact with their natural habitat, including the food they eat and the predators they encounter. The characters are the Mouse Guard, and their job is to protect and assist the population. For the most part your characters will receive a mission where the characters are given an obstacle to overcome. Pending your success you may have consequences which will alter the direction of game play, possibly resulting in plot twists and side quests. You need at least 2 players, though this game is more fun when you have about 5 player, so that would be 4 players and the game master. Each player controls just one character you design yourself, however for faster play the book does have some premade characters you can use. The only drawback is that it can take up to 2 hours to create a character, but that just means you have a greater background for your character.The play mechanics is different than your typical game. This game has less of a focus on combat and more focused on the storyline. For this game you won't need a full multi-sided dice set, you'll only need six sided dice which makes this a bit more accessible for those who don't own full dice sets. All storylines and information the game master needs is included in the book, which is well organized to help in locating the needed information.Over all I would recommend this book. It has a unique take on role playing that focuses more on the story than on combat. It's easy to play and offers up creative storylines for anyone who wants to play.

Gorgeous art and really great rules set. Awesome for beginners and advanced role-players alike. I cannot recommend this book enough and wish I had more time to play it. I would get the box set though. The character sheets are dope!

The setting is fun, the system is different, and the rule book is terrible. It is full of incorrect information from first the edition the just confuses the reader as to the proper rule to use. A quick internet search will clear things up quickly. Read up on the burning wheel forums (that's the system the game uses) the errata and then read the book. It sounds odd but it will help you avoid confusion. Don't let a poorly proof read book ruin a fun little rpg.

This is a great RPG for the younger crowd or as a change of pace for an established RPG group.The rules are straight-forward, and developing scenarios as the GM is much easier than in most games.The players take on the role of Mouse Guardsmen. They have a variety of missions available, and most involved overcoming environmental challenges as well as the machinations of bad non-player characters.Before each session, each player is encouraged to come up with a mission statement and to cooperate with the other players as they develop their mission statements.This is a great fifth generation RPG!

The early Greek philosophers, thinkers like Thales, Anaximander, Pythagoras, Parmenides, Zeno, Empedocles, Leucippus, are foundational for the Western intellectual tradition. I couldn't imagine a better book then this one on the subject. Below are a few quotes from Jonathan Barnes's excellent 40 page introduction along with my brief comments:"First and most simply, the Presocratics invented the very idea of science and philosophy. They hit upon that special way of looking at the world which is the scientific and rational way. They saw the world as something ordered and intelligible, its history following an explicable course and its different parts arranged in a comprehensible system. The world was not a random collection of bits, its history was not an arbitrary jumble of events." ---------- This is central to their spirit of inquiry, an approach compatible with a modern physicist or chemist."Nor was the world a series of events determined by the will or the caprice of the gods. The Presocratics were not atheists: they allowed the god into their brave new world, and some of them attempted to produce an improved and rationalized theology in place of the anthropomorphic divinities of the Olympian pantheon. But their theology had little to do with religion, and they removed most of the traditional functions of the gods. Their thunder was no longer the growling of a minatory Zeus." ----------- Again, the Presocratics have kindred spirits in the science departments at modern universities.Jonathan Barnes goes on to write how the Presocratics explained the world in ways that were systematic and economical, that is, these early philosophers wanted to "explain as much as possible in terms of as little as possible." Some of their key concepts were order (kosmos), nature (phusis), origins (arche) , and reason (logos). --------- These Greek words are supercharged with meaning. I used one English word for simplicity sake. How supercharged? The author does a fine job elaborating.The words of the Presocratics have come down to us as fragments. Here are several of my favorites:Xenophanes"But if cows and horses or lions had hands and drew with their hands or made the things men make, then horses would draw the forms of gods like horses, cows like cows, and each would make their bodies similar in shape to their own."Heraclitus"The uncomprehending, when they hear, are like the deaf. To them applies the saying: though present they are absent."Democritus"To a wise man the whole earth is accessible; for the country of a great soul is the whole world.""The desire for more destroys what is present - like Aesop's dog.""One should tell the truth, not speak at length."

It should be noted that there are two works on Presocratic philosophy by Dr. Barnes: this work, and a more esoteric work entitled "The Presocratic Philosophers."That said, this work, the exoteric counterpart, serves is primary purpose: appealing to the general pulic. It features an excellent collection of quotations from a variety of sources. Barnes is cautious about the validity of this sources, and admits their dubious character where necessary. His introduction gives an adequate overview of contemporary scholarship on and interpretations of presocratic thought, and its place in the history of philosophy.The work lacks two things. First, because it is exoteric in its design, it lacks a vigorous interpretation of the texts given, beyond the short introduction. Second, its organization is often inadequate; arranged by subject in some places, and sources in other places. The reader is left to organize and interpret the information much by their own discretion. Whether this is ultimately an advantage or disadvantage, I will not here decide.

It was a lot to read. Was a lot of "the son of this, who was the son of that, and the son of this who... etc". Other than that, this book offered interesting and important info regarding philosophers and about philosohpy.

The book contains essentially the complete writings of the pre-socratics in readable translation. The actual texts are printed in bold, with commentary by both pagan and Christian writers up to the medieval period. The edotor's own comments are helpful and clear.

This book was for an Ancient Philosophy class and was assigned by my professor. I was expecting either a treatise delivered by each philosopher, or a biography and explanation by the editor, but instead it's mostly the words from the philosophers themselves, or some other philosopher who came later who wrote about the works of his predecessors. A great book for a class, but not for personal reading I feel.

Nice primer on Pre-Socratic thought.
