Professor Hofstadter sets the standard for the dissection of many facets of U.S. history. Here he tells the tale of the intertwining factors of American culture and politics that lead to prevalent anti-intellectualism. Although published in 1963, this remains the definitive work on the distrust of elites and experts and is sadly relevant to the present day. Hofstadter writes with a storyteller's style that does not skip or gloss over details but invites the reader to enjoy the experience of learning. He also often displays a wry sense of humor. If you want to understand why those most qualified to address issues -- whether they be foreign policy, law, running government, social sciences, etc. -- are often considered suspect sources of information while talking heads with no knowledge but loud voices are embraced, this book explains the framework for that culture. Personally, I found the writing so smooth and the subject so engrossing I could hardly take breaks between devouring the book.Hofstadter combines both painstaking detail and sweeping themes. I cannot imagine even the most learned people not learning new details about American history and the forces that have shaped our nation. Hofstadter's analysis is very persuasive -- analytical but with passion and new insights. Even events or people from American history that one knows about, one will be shown new perspectives. For example, one might not have considered how American democratic principles can encourage anti-intellectualism. Or how our economic system and intelligentsia themselves can sometimes encourage expertise and other times discourage it. It shouldn't need to be said that a Pulitzer Prize winning book is a must read, but I'll say it anyway.

Recent political development in this country, in which gossip, hearsay, "alternative facts," wishful thinking, invective, and shaming the intellectual class have become (again) coin of the realm at the highest levels of government all remind us that this is an enduring (though thankfully not always dominant) theme in our culture. Richard Hofstadter's 1964 masterwork thus points backward to the formation of these themes in American history, and points to the present and future with concern. People who worry about such things should definitely read this book, and the fact that it's now over 50 years old is of little consequence because of the way it helps us understand trends and events.

First, let me say what this book is not. It's not a book that can be understood only by deep and brilliant minds. The style is clear and readable, and anyone who can read and understand a newspaper editorial can understand what is said here. It's not a peevish rant about how everyone below a certain IQ level, or everyone of a certain political persuasion, or everyone who goes to church, must be mentally dull. The author goes out of his way to be fair and even-handed to all points of view, perhaps especially those with which he doesn't agree. Finally, even though it was published when John F. Kennedy was President, it is decidedly not out of date. In fact, anyone reading it will be amazed how the problems described here, from 50, 150, or even 200 years ago, may still crop up today. What is an intellectual? It is not necessarily someone with a genius-level IQ, or someone who speaks 5 languages, or even necessarily someone who discovers a new theory in physics. An intellectual is simply someone who takes the same pleasure in the exercise of his or her mind, in exploring ideas, as healthy and physically fit people do when they're out throwing a Frisbee or playing touch football. The pleasure is in the activity itself.Imagine a small child trying to see how many blocks she can stack up on top of each other before they fall. On the one hand, the child is playing--that is, doing something for no reason but that she enjoys it. On the other hand, she is perfectly serious and focused on her goal. If the stack of blocks falls down, she simply tries again. The intellectual is the person who shows this combination of play and seriousness towards ideas. To use the analogy of blocks again, the intellectual takes each block and turns it over to look at it from all sides, stacks the blocks up, arranges them in various shapes, and so forth.Of course this activity can have a serious purpose--e.g., thinking through the ethics of cloning--but to be a specifically intellectual pursuit, it must be done out of the love of the activity itself.America has often had a love-hate relationship with intellectualism, and still does today. Ironically, one of the ages that prized the intellect most was the Puritan era, because Puritans valued a learned ministry; after all, it was they who founded Harvard. Later, many of the Founding Fathers, such as Jefferson and Franklin, had wide intellectual interests, from philosophy, to science and the arts. Up to the middle of the 19th century, even many businessmen were cultured and well-educated--indeed, the goal of that day was to make one's fortune in trade and then retire at a relatively early age to a life of culture and philanthropy.Despite these notable periods of favor for the intellectual, it is equally true that something about American civilization has often worked against intellectualism. Part of it was that America, which began as pioneer settlements, always had to be very practical. Another aspect was the idea that cultured and educated elites were undemocratic--resentment of "the elites" didn't begin with today's Tea Party but was always an undercurrent of American life. A third aspect was that Americans tended to see the past as something dark and backward to be improved upon and then abandoned by American know-how and self-reliance.In politics, the Jeffersonian philosopher type went out with the age of Andrew Jackson. For the rest of the 19th century, intellectuals were mostly ineffectual reform types, criticizing from the sidelines, in magazine articles; they were not consulted in public life again until the turn of the 20th century. Their favor was high during the age of Wilson, perhaps even higher with Franklin D. Roosevelt's "Brain Trust," only to come under suspicion once more during the McCarthy era of the early 1950s.In business, the shift from trade to railroad building and, later, manufacturing, left the businessman less leisure for intellectual pursuits, nor was he particularly interested in having men work for him who were preoccupied with theory and speculation--enough education to read, write, and handle business math was satisfactory. In religion, the scholarly minister was replaced by the barely literate circuit rider, who rode the mountains and forests for miles to preach in log cabins to backwoods settlers. Later, it was felt that too much education might undermine religious faith, and we had the spectacle of the Scopes trial. Meanwhile, practical businessmen of that day didn't care to know about theological ideas so much as the idea of religion as a "power source" that could be turned on at will.Even literature and the arts suffered. America, unlike Europe, had no ruins of the Parthenon or medieval castles, nor did it have the same traditions of civilization. Artists and writers could certainly portray what they found here and did, but there was still a tension between merely celebrating this new land and achieving the critical distance with which the intellectual examines everything.Even education itself was not without its challenges. If you think that "the good old days" of education, when every child had 3 years of foreign language, 3 years of math, 3 years of science, and 2 years of U.S. history, lasted continuously until a couple of decades ago, read chapters 13 and 14 of this book, and they will startle you. In the name of progressive educational theories, traditional education underwent such radical changes beginning in 1910, culminating in the "life adjustment" movement of the 1940s and 1950s, that the U.S. Navy found that many of its World War II recruits required remedial math, and the president of Yale wrote, in 1954, about a high school graduate who seemed intelligent enough to attend Yale but whose high school transcript showed mostly electives in subjects like school choir, social adjustment, etc., with just a smattering of English, history, and the more traditional academic subjects.Hofstadter's final chapter addresses the tension between intellectuals who are willing to apply their knowledge and abilities to the service of institutions, including government and industry and those, on the other hand, who fear that they will "sell out" and be co-opted by conventional norms if they cooperate too much with society. Hofstadter was optimistic that it was possible for intellectuals to adopt a balanced outlook, cooperating with society and using their talents for its benefit, while always remaining independent-minded enough to apply their own original thinking to society's problems and not simply go along with the crowd.Hofstadter's untimely death from leukemia at 55, in 1970, certainly deprived America of one of her foremost thinkers. This book, one of about 6 major works that he wrote, is around 450 pages, arranged in chapters of about 30 pages apiece, with notes at the end of each chapter. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to understand how the world's most advanced society can sometimes seem, at the same time, to contain knuckleheads and dunces--some, unfortunately, in positions of power. Again, this is not new--the only question is how we will respond and what kind of society we wish to have.

Hofstadter's characterization of Eisenhower has some kind of low brow anti-intellectual is not accurate. When Ike attended war college graduate school he was first in his class. It is true that Ike was a person of enormous practical accomplishmentin the roles he played in WWII, NATO, and as President, but he was not an anti-intellectual by any means. Many people who say his election as president over Adlai Stevenson as anti-intellectualism, but later changed their minds in retrospect. People like Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.The Korean War was halted shortly after Ike was inaugurated as President, after 3 years of conflict and stalemate. Ike avoided getting involved in Vietnam and Indochina, and Ike's tenure was generally marked by progress in Civil Rights, relative peace and prosperity. This is in contrast with the prior 8 years and the subsequent 8 years. America did not fight the disastrous Vietnam War during the time Eisenhower was President. We will never know how Stevenson would have done in these areas had he been elected President.

I really liked the first installment... this one, not so much. I fell in love with Jude and Lucy in the first book so was excited for their story to continue. Unfortunately, as much as a piece of me enjoyed reading about their lives after the first book, I am left wondering whether the author should have just stopped with the first book. A plus was that you could still feel the chemistry between them at times. However, it really just fell flat for me overall. Too many of the situations seemed overly contrived, and I think the author could have put a bit more thought into them and the plot over all. The situation with the cheerleader that "gets in the way" is actually just more annoying than anything... and I actually found myself irritated with the author for her lack of research in this department. While I understand what the author was trying to do with the whole "spirit sister" thing, it just didn't make sense and was too unbelievable. This would never happen in a real-life situation. At most schools college cheerleaders are actually discouraged from even fraternizing with the players, much less doing their laundry. Which is just absurd. If would have been munch more believable had it been a "sorority big-sister" or team manager or something. The other thing that irritated me was Lucy's continued treatment of Jude. At times I felt that she really didn't deserve him... I think the author took this line in the plot too far. It was also no longer believable. I also wish that the author would have spent more time on their shared troubled past. This really could have been the major issue rather than the highly contrived, under-researched, and over-played pseudo-issues that seem to plague the couple needlessly. Overall, I'm disappointed because this could have been a great continuation of the story of two characters I fell in love with in book one... but alas, it ended up just falling short. But all the same, I will always love Lucy and Jude.

I'm writing a review of the entire trilogy, which I loved as a whole, because I think books 2 and 3 are significantly better than the first. No, these books are not contenders for the Pulitzer Prize, nor are they mind-twisters, brain-benders, educational, or breaking any literary boundaries. But they are FUN, passionate, sexy, and romantic. The second 2 books even contain some particularly insightful and meaningful observations about love and relationships (not to mention several hot sex scenes ;). As a jaded, cynical, overeducated, nearly-32-year-old woman who should probably be reading something more "intelligent" and advanced outside of work (booorrrriiiinngg), and who avoids sappy romance novels because they're unrealistic and contrary to pretty much everything I've experienced with men, this trilogy cut through my romance-raincloud and steel-encircled-heart-and-soul. The trilogy shows how both men and women can (and do) act stupidly even if they're head-over-heels in love and easily self-destruct a relationship, and there are also a multitude of outside factors that can rip through a relationship. Basically... all odds are against having an amazing relationship. BUT love CAN prevail if the man and woman accept this problem, want each other bad enough, and will constantly work at it. One of my favorite excerpts from the trilogy, and which sums up the main premise of the books, is:"You're letting the fairy tales you grew up with cloud your mind. Love isn't easy. Especially the really good kind. It's difficult, and you'll want to rip your hair out just as many days as you'll feel the wind at your back. . . . But it's worth it. It's worth fighting for. Don't let what isn't real blind you to what is. Life isn't perfect, we aren't perfect, so why should we expect love to be? . . . Love is what brings you together, Lucy. But it's the blood, sweat, and tears of hard work that keeps you together, . . . Love isn't just about flowers, candlelight, and romance, sweetheart. It's hard work, and trust, and tears, and misery. But at the end of each day, if you can still look at the person at your side and can't imagine anyone else you'd rather have there, the pain and heartache and the ups and downs of love are worth it."

Clash moves Lucy and Jude from the Highschool to the College scene. They are separated by a five hour drive and a canyon of relationship problems. All of the issues these two had in Crash, lack of trust, lots of temper, major jealousy...all still in effect and somewhat magnified in Clash.Jude is playing out his full ride football scholarship, hanging with fellow players and overly interested cheerleaders. While Lucy is balancing studies and dance and hoping to keep Jude's anger issues in check. When Jude is assigned a 'spirit sister' to make his campus life easier, it's Lucy who loses her cool and her trust in Jude.I've seen many comments from others about how unreasonably Lucy reacts to the things happening in Jude's life. She jumps to conclusions and does not put blind faith in Jude. I understand those points but Jude never really trusts Lucy either. If he did, he would have been more forthcoming and honest with her. I love Jude as a character, though he really needs to chill the hell out, but he's not without some pretty major faults in this edition of the Jude/ Lucy love saga. I love that he feels fiercely, be it love or anger.Lucy really is just a wreck. She has some fairly large life events happening and Jude complicates all of them for her. I thought many of her decisions were somewhat childish and based solely on fear. But other decisions she made were not without a healthy dose of thought. I can't fault her for those.Clash is another roller coaster ride, exactly what you would expect from these two love birds. You'll experience tears, anger, hate, love, sorrow...you name it. Clash is a heart-breaker of a novel. I enjoyed it and will continue with the series but am hoping for a big injection of maturity in the third installment.

(I’m only talking about the first half of the book.)Do you remember the 1964 movie “Goldfinger” with James Bond 007 and Oddjob with his bowler hat? This was a terrific movie! The book we are talking about is probably for kids less than 13 years old and older people (like me). And this is a TERRIFIC book as well. This one has Oddjobz, but no James Bond 007 at all --- more like James Bond 013. Why? Because there are 13 Chapters and there PUNS GALORE!! (I even like what I wrote!) And all are connected with real James Bond movies (many of which I don’t even remember). Here are some of the characters:Tom (the narrator); his best friend, Pradeep; Pradeep’s his 3 year old sister, Sami; and, of course, Oddjobz. The bad guys are: Mark (Tom’s older brother) an EVILScientist; and Sanj (Pradeep’s older brother) an EVIL Computer Genius). And there are some “animals”: Tom has a ZOMBIE GOLDFISH named Frankie; Oddjobz has an octopus named Antonio; and Mark’s EVIL vampire kitten named Fang, but I don’t think it’s really evil.A wonderful, funny book. Kudos to the author (Mo O’Hara) and illustrator (Marek Jagucki). 5 Goldfish out of 5!!!!!Last thing about “Goldfinger”: Oddjob was Harold Sakata and he was a Olympic and professional wrestler. (I didn’t know that!)

My 2nd grader loves these books. Although we read them out of order they are still really fun think read. They do use words likeep "moron" and "stupid" when the older brother is harassing the younger kids but that doesn't bother me as my daughter knows not that use those words when talking to people.

After being told by my six year old that he doesn't like zombies, my reluctant little reader is loving this book. It is imaginative and fun and appeals to a first grader's sense of humor. My one concern is that I spend a lot of time trying to teach my child not to engage in name-calling and this book has a lot of it, starting with "MORON" that is littered all over the story. I don't think it adds to the story that much. I've chosen to take this as a teachable moment, but parents should be aware that it exists.

My kid loves this book! Absolutely hilarious and heart-warming to hear your kid laughing at this book. It's a wonderful introduction to chapter reading. Definitely not for new readers, but great for kids who love to read (i'd say ages about 8-12+).The chapters are short, so having rewards for reading chapters makes getting them to read a little easier.

I read this book to my son, who at the time didn't enjoy reading very much. This book is funny and showed him a new way that reading could be enjoyable. We love the characters, and Frankie is the best. The flip art on the corners is an added bonus. We look forward to reading the further adventures of Frankie, the zombie goldfish and his humans.

My 9-yr. old grandson (and I) love the Zombie Goldfish books and have been reading them, as they are published for about two years. They are great fun and tell a great story. Very entertaining for boys, girls and the folks who are reading to them.

My son absolutely loves these books. I have bought him the entire set that is out so far and he is anxiously awaiting the next one. I am not sure what the appeal is but I know that they have both stories and other games and things for him to play in each book. They are written at approximately a 3rd grade reading level.

I bought this to read with my niece. The title sounded funny and made me think she would enjoy it. So far we both really like it and plan to read more books in the series.

We have been in Rome three times in the past (total of 6 weeks). We used mainly the Michelin Green Guide and recommendations of our Roman friends. Nevertheless, as we have been there for the last time in 2005, we decided to refresh or memories from a brand new 2019 guide. We have chosen Rick Steves Rome 2019.I’m about 75% through the guide and I find most of the information very helpful and correct even if I would add a bit more information about some unique spots; e.g., about the foam on coffee at the Sant' Eustachio Il Caffè.Another passage could use a bit of explaining: "You’ll pass (at #16, on the right) a low-key doorway protected by security. This is the headquarters of Italy’s Democratic Party. The street becomes Via di Propaganda. You’ll pass alongside the...” (Kindle Locations 2500-2502).Not many readers will remember that the Italian Democratic Party has very different roots than the American Democratic Party – it is the Italian Communist Party that changed their name to something rather misleading. The “Democrats” mismanaged the Italian economy so badly that the current government (and the mayor of Rome) is governed by parties that were just a few years ago left- and rightwing populist movements, on the fringe of Italian politics. As this is the first guide by Rick Steves that I purchased, I did not know that he has a very childish sense of humor in addition to out of place leftist biting remarks; e.g.“And the big beige building with columns and clock houses the right-wing Il Tempo newspaper. It’s appropriately situated in what was the headquarters of the fascist party of Mussolini.” (Kindle Locations 2447-2449).Sorry Mr. Steves, the fascists were just a nationalist version of communists and had nothing to do with the right wing. This comment about the Il Tempo shows the problem with making silly comments without first checking some sources. By the way, Il Tempo was founded after Liberation of Rome, so it has no connection to the fascists. What about this childish and silly comment that a good editor should delete: “Christians blamed the fall [of Rome] on moral decay. Pagans blamed it on Christians. Socialists blamed it on a shallow economy based on the spoils of war. (Republicans blamed it on Democrats.)” (Kindle Locations 3443-3444). Why not the other way around? The final quote shows that slandering those that Mr. Steves doesn't like takes precedence over facts: “In the 1500s, the best way to keep Protestants from stealing your church members was to reason with them. By the 1600s, it was easier to kill them, and so the Thirty Years’ War raged across Europe. The church became crusted over with the colorful, bombastic, jingoistic Baroque we see today.” (Kindle Locations 2770-2772)Hello! What about reading a bit about what precipitated the Thirty Years’ War? Anyone knows what ended the Peace of Augsburg? What about the Defenestration of Prague? Were there more Roman Catholics or more Protestants killed before the Peace of Westphalia ended the carnage in 1648? Who won the Thirty Years’ War?

We just returned from 10 days in Rome. I kept this book with me all of the time. It was great for organizing self guided walks in the different areas of Rome. For example with took a bus to the Termini station and visited all of the sites the book described in that area one day. We were able to see all of the Michaelangelos, Berninis and Caravaggios scared around the city. Good descriptions of what to see at the more popular sites like the Vatican museums as well. We did have some guided tours and we noticed those tracked pretty closely with what was in the book.

This book bailed me out. We were in Venice during extreme flooding and headed to Rome. I paged through the book and found a hotel named Oceania which Rick said was a favorite of his. It was the highlight of our trip. I would never have found a hotel in the historic district with that much charm and delightfull owners without this book. It was a bargain as well.

Nobody does it like Rick Steves! I used a lot of books to plan my trip to Italy and Rick's consistently contain the most and most useful information. From train travel tips to restaurant suggestions to self-guided tours, this is the book to get. I love the little man that it came with and the level of helpful hints provided.

Rick Steve's books are the best for learning about destinations. Been using them for our last 5 trips to Europe

Rick Steves never disappoints. Handy tips, real life information and great history! In fact, we found that this book was more accurate in opening times for attractions than Google! Any time we travel, we buy Rick Steves book.

Excellent and has already payed for itself. I booked a tour to Tuscany and used a code from the book, saved me 45 bucks. This book is just filled completely with good to know information. This book will be with me in my suitcase.

As always, as great guide when we went on a trip to Rome this past October! Everything is organized well in the book and his tips are pretty much spot on!

I got to know Diego Caloca before he wrote this book. I read review after review from people that he rebound their Bibles for and they were gorgeous! Taking a tired old Bible and not only giving it new life, but with the leather cover and the leather lining... I used lamb skin... They were transformed into supple works of art that actually felt alive in your hand. He shared with me his accumulated knowledge of re-binding Bibles. I was able to rebind several Bibles and was encouraged by Diego after each one no matter how rough it was. He is a born teacher and he really knows and understands his craft and loves to share his knowledge. I am so happy that Diego wrote this book... Well Done Diego!

I’m thankful that Mr. Caloca wrote this guidebook. He’s one of the greatest Bible rebinders out there right now. As an amateur who rebinds Bibles for family and friends I learned many tips from his book that will help my Bibles look better. He is also a man of God and his gift as a craftsman preserves the word of God for future generations. God bless you Mr. Caloca and keep doing The Lord’s work!

Diego has allowed the Christian community to be enriched with his God given talent. His humility and simple approach to this ministry has been a blessing to thousands of people all over the world. His quality and attention to detail is unmatched when compared to similar binderies who charge much more!

The Little Black Dress and Zoot Suits: Depression and Wartime Fashions from the 1930s to the 1950s (Dressing a Nation: The History of U.S. Fashion)

Review

"This entry in the Dressing a Nation: The History of U.S. Fashion series covers a time of rapid change in the American fashion industry, from an era of frugal thriftiness necessary in the face of the Great Depression and WWII to one informed by a brand-new youth culture, movie stars, and post-war leisure time. The book has five sections: Women's Everyday wear, Women's Haute Couture, Men's Clothing, Hairstyles and Accessories, and finally, Designers, Photographers, and Models. There's plenty for fashion-savvy readers to digest. This is the time frame in which famous names―Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Lacoste―are sure to ring out to young fashionistas. The book's sharp, bold, rather tidy design features eye-catching art from the period. Zoot suits, poodle skirts, and bikinis as well as pervasive use of the zipper are explored as turning points in American ready-to-wear clothing. This engaging title is topped off by a lengthy bibliography and further reading section for true fashion devotees." --Booklist (Journal)"This series documents women's and men's clothing, hairstyles and accessories, designers, and inventions of the different periods. Well-researched texts provide clear explanations of the ways important historical events, people, and technology of the times influenced how clothes were designed, made, purchased, and worn. Numerous archival photos and entertaining sidebars contribute to a lively read." --The Horn Book Guide (Journal)"This series, a history of fashion in the United States, is more than a simple account of fashion during particular eras. A variety of interesting aspects are examined, such as the ever-present influence of Europe on American tastes and how wars affected fashions. Techniques and technology used in making clothes and accessories are included. Fashions for women, men, and children are all part of the story, as are hairstyles and facial hair. In addition to the vivid photographs and illustrations, primary sources such as journal entries, letters, and catalog pages are found. The volumes are interesting and easy to read, although the subject matter might limit use." --Library Media Connection (Journal)"These well-written and appealing books place clothing and fashion, from underwear to headgear, in the larger context of American history, emphasizing that for most of our past, clothing signified status and reinforced societal roles, especially for women. The series includes information about the clothing of many groups, notably Native Americans, African Americans, soldiers, and children. It also discusses regional and ethnic differences in dress and traces how clothing styles and forms reflected changes in society. Large, attractive period illustrations and color and archival photos and boxed quotes enhance the texts. This series is certain to draw both researchers and browsers." --School Library Journal, Series Made Simple (Journal)

This has got to be the world's most expensive book. It comes in a mere 64 pages, the writing is on a par with secondary school level composition, and the author has produced such other expert tomes as "Italy in Pictures" and "Does a ten Gallon Hat Really Hold Ten Gallons". Even the photos are hackneyed. Anyone really wishing to understand anything about American clothing is advised to go eklsewhere. Anywhere else. A total rip-off

Excellent

When this book popped up on NetGalley from Lerner, I was all over it. 40s fashion is usually how I like to dress when dressing fancy, simply because the styles were geared towards a more curvaceous body (which is what I have). Plus they had some awesome hair. So now there's a book that highlights all of the great moments in war time fashion? Yes, please! This isn't a book with a plot; it's just something that's nice and informational about the clothing and general style of the era. From the hair to the clothes, accessories and shoes, for both men and women, LITTLE BLACK DRESS does a great job of highlighting the best parts of the fashion. Not to mention I got introduced to some awesome designers whose designs I might just have to take to a seamstress because, well, I want some of these dresses, quite frankly.I only had a couple of complaints. One, I wish Behnke would have mentioned Betty Page, whose style had a huge influence on the culture of the time, along with the hair style known as the victory roll. It was a very popular wartime style that takes some practice to manage. I didn't see either of these mentioned and I felt the book could have even better if they'd been added. Also, someone got a little liberal with some of the photos and using Photoshop. I liked most of the photography. Looking at old pictures always draws me in but some of them were wildly colored with backgrounds that weren't flattering to the part of the image that they were trying to make pop. I think a more subtle background with a simple 3D effect in the foreground would have been more than enough to highlight the fashion in those particular photos. (This is in the NetGalley digital advanced copy edition.)Other than that, loved it and I want to buy it for my collection. It's a good book to have for reference (for costumes, for instance, or, if you're like me, for actual dressing) and it's just something nice to look at. It'd make a great coffee table book. One thing LITTLE BLACK DRESS really proved is that the styles that emerged in these three decades really made a lasting impression on culture as a whole. There's a level of class there that isn't seen too much today and now so many designs fall back on those older ones for inspiration, although they take it to levels now that demean the original class of the style. In a world where trash is class and the less you wear means the sexier you are, it's wonderful seeing images in a time where glamour really shown. Where sex appeal wasn't just in the type of body you had but in how you held yourself, in a time where clothes were made for bodies, not the other way around.Seriously, I loved this book and if you're into the same kind of fashion I am, you'll love it too.

Perhaps you've looked through a photo album and chuckled a bit when you saw how your parents or grandparents dressed many years ago. Fashion is constantly evolving from decade to decade and even year to year trends can be radically different. Looking back into the fashion history of the United States can be a fascinating venture and statement on the times. The 1920s, dubbed the "Jazz Age and Roaring Twenties," was an exciting time to be alive. Daring styles reflected this era, but the flamboyant fashions would quickly be a thing of the past when the New York stock market crashed in 1929. Fashions quickly became more simplistic and practical. In the 1930s frugal was in and was reflected not only in the styles, but also the fabric. Man-made fabrics such as rayon started to come on the scene as women had less expendable income. Women began to sew and knit more of their clothing and companies such as Sears "provided an innovative money-saving solution by selling semi-made clothes." People began to become more aware of fashion when magazines such as Vogue began to let them know what the "in" fashions were and what everyone was wearing. In this book you'll swing thorough the decades getting a glimpse of everything from leisure wear to the infamous bikini that emerged in the 1950s.Haute couture of "high dressmaking" or "high sewing," burst on the scene in the 1930s and was heavily influenced by the art of its day. Elsa Schiaparelli, Babrielle "Coco" Chanel, and Christian Dior,Yves Saint Laurent, Clare Potter, and Elizabeth Hawes were just a few of the designers who influenced American fashion. Fabric rationing, prior to and during wartime, had been lifted and allowed people to become more expressive with their choice of clothing. You'll read many interesting ways that haute couture filtered down to styles that your grandparents may have worn, including the wedding dress that Grandma may have said yes to. Similarly to your look at women's everyday wear and haute couture, this book will take you on a fascinating whirlwind tour of men's clothing, hairstyles and accessories (hats, jewelry, scarves, footwear, etc.), and the designers, photographers, and models who made fashion come alive. Do you know what twin sets and ducktails are? You will by the time you finish this book! This whirlwind tour of the fashions of yesteryear will fascinate readers of all ages. Simply browsing the book and seeing men showing off their zoot suits and seeing a Horst P. Horst photograph told me that I'd be in for a real treat. The primary audience, the teen or young adult, will also enjoy reading about the evolution of American fashion. There are many opportunities for students to use this book as a stepping stone for a school report. This work is very well written and researched and fun to read. The text is generously illustrated with impressive photographs and has numerous informative sidebars. One, for example, discusses the impact of Television on fashion and in particular the impact stars such as Lucille Ball and Donna Reed had on hairstyles. Historical vignettes about everyone from film stars to British royalty are woven seamlessly into these pages. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, a timeline (1931 to 1959) source notes, a selected bibliography, and additional recommended book, film, and website resources to explore. (thank you netgalley :D)I KNEW I'd love this book, but I LOVED THIS BOOK.I'm a total historical fashion junkie. I devour old vogue patterns, and have gotten light-headed over finding boxes of old patterns at garage sales. There was nothing to not like about this book except that I wanted MORE.The pics were fun, the info was good, but not overwhelming. It covered everything from hairstyles, to everyday clothes, to the really, really, fun stuff.I love how the information on the clothing was integrated into the history of the time periods, and it NEVER felt like a history book. I loved the organization, and the highlighted quotes.WAY. FUN. BOOK.Also - I'm buying this for my neice, and even though I've read it, I'm going to buy one for me, because I must HOLD it.
