Hussein was an autocrat, the author allows, but a benign one, whose resolute crackdown on Palestinian extremists in the 1970 civil war was necessary to save Jordan from chaos. The late King Hussein of Jordan was the favorite Arab ruler of both Israeli and other Western leaders, often referred to affectionately as the PLK (plucky little king). Professor Shlaim has written a massive, engrossing, and provocative biography of Hussein that is likely to engender controversy, because it is not a balanced work. Shlaim is a strong admirer of Hussein, and he is highly critical of most Israeli politicians, particularly in their dealings with Hussein. Still, this isn’t a hagiography; Shlaim views Hussein as a man constantly forced to reconcile his primary goal, the preservation of the Hashemite dynasty, with the aims of Arab—particularly Palestinian—nationalists. This tension led to his disastrous decision to intervene in the Six Day War and the loss of the West Bank to Israel. The core of the book examines Hussein’s frequent meetings with Israelis after that war, as he sought peace at great personal risk. Hussein is described as flexible and willing to compromise, while Israelis are seen as rigid and consistently devoted to territorial expansion. A truly extrodinary account of every detail of King Hussien's lifelong quest for a place for his kingdom at the table of respected nations of the world - primarily by pushing for peace in his region at any cost (most often through secret contact with his Israeli nemeses). He was not without errors in this quest, and he benefitted personally ($$) probably more than he should have, but this is the story of an exceptional person on an extrodinary journey who regularly showed more character than either his Isreali or American counterparts. This is the striking aspect of the book -- the lack of good faith (or even honesty) on the part of the leaders of Isreal and USA. It makes an American with an open mind a little uncomfortable with the actions of our leaders - congressional, but also presidents. BUT, the book is as detailed as it could be and focuses on the quest, the policies, and the political experience of this fine man, this amazing king.

I preferred the bio of Queen Noor to get a feel for the king's life, personality, diplomatic efforts, and Near Eastern problems.The Near East has, for past 80 years, been a total mess and impossible for one man to solve. Read this book onlyt if you are really, reallyinto Near East politics.

While history is, on one level, facts, there are always different perspectives from which those facts are viewed. It is worthwhile reading many perspectives to gain a better understanding of events.This book portrays the late King Hussein's quest for peace and his desire to preserve the Hashemite dynasty. It follows his life from a young boy who witnesses the horrific murder of his beloved grandfather, to his own death after a long reign on the throne of Jordan.I was interested in reading of familiar events from a different perspective than the one I got from the media in South Africa when they were taking place. However, there were times when I found the writing style difficult to follow and there was a sense of ploughing my way through the book in parts. If I had not already been fascinated by the land and people of Jordan I may well not have finished the book; although it was well worth reading right to the end.

Hussein's life was principled on the premise that " King Hussein was fundamentally and structurally a client king ...for all practical purposes the Hashemite legacy inherited from his grandfather was one of continuing dependence on the West." P.154His wide recognition, acclaim and complexity were due to " the principle of balancing applied at all levels: the inter -Arab, the regional, (domestic) and the global...this meant balancing between Arab and conservatives and Arab radicals, between the Arab world on the one hand and Israel on the other, and the global level between the West and the Soviet bloc...The survival of the Hashemite dynastic interests were paramount (and) the guiding principle behind his foreign policy, the key to constant shits and maneuvers , to all the alliances and realignments " P.212With these two elements as the deciding factors in Hussein's life, Avi Shlaim delivers a superb biography that is well written, researched, revealing, passionate and to a great extent objective.Regardless if one agrees or not with the King's inherited role, he was able to save his dynasty and country.Although King Hussein's life revolved on the previous mentioned principles, not all of the King's actions can be aligned with those principles if one takes a simplistic view of those actions without serious reflection and reading between the lines. Avi Shlaim does an excellent job on analyzing the King and his actions from the day he reached the thrown until the last moments on his deathbed.For example, when Iraq invaded Kuwait, the King sided with Iraq, which is contradictory to King's " balancing principle." However, after reading the author's analysis and the foreign/domestic challenges facing the King, the King through careful policies and outstanding foresight was able to save his country and dynasty from Iraq, Israel and from domestic upheavals.Even though the King had a "special" relationship with Israel for many reasons, which are explored in the book, the King realized the only way to have the support of Washington was through Israel. This is revealed when King Hussein gave Bush I a memo that stated in part, in his (the king's) judgment the Arab-Israeli conflict was not a foreign policy for the US but rather a domestic US issue due to the domestic influences in the US on the issue. P 478 Although not comprehensible to the King, this an obstacle to peace in the region.Another example is when President Clinton at the request of King Hussein was unable to sway congress to forgive Jordan's debt to the US. Clinton in turn asked for the help of Rabin. " Yes Mr. President," replied Rabin slowly we will do our best. To the Jordanians present at this brief exchange provided a remarkable demonstration of the political clout wielded by Israel and its friends on Capitol Hill" p 545During the peace negotiations with Israel, King Hussein was very calculating with extreme foresight, Unlike Arafat who in my judgment was incompetent to lead his people's cause and prone to miscalculation and countless poor judgments before and after the peace treaty. To Israel's satisfaction, Arafat committed a huge blunder by going behind the King's back to negotiate with Israel a separate peace treaty with Israel.King Hussein, in his correct judgment believed the agreement Arafat reached with Israel was vague, imprecise, and that substantive issues (Jerusalem, borders, refugees) were not addressed in the accord but left for future negotiations. " No one with any sense would sign a treaty first and discuss its technical clauses afterwards." P 533 King Hussein told Rabin when he asked the King to follow in the footsteps of the Peace treaty reached with the PLO.These are some of the examples, perhaps not the most important, but nevertheless revealing on why I thought this an outstanding book on the life of King Hussein.

Love this story knowing how much this king suffered to keep this kingdom up

Remembering the love of the Jordanians for their leader, this book relates many of the triumphs of his time as King of Jordan. He accepted hundreds/thousands of Palestinian refugees from their homeland in Palestine/Israel when the Israeli govt relieved them of their right to live in their own land.

Always admired King Hussein and reading this book made me realize even more what a great loss we suffered with his death.

Best Historical Scholarly Book on the History of Jordan and the Hashemite Dynasty in Jordan. Recommend: The King's Council by Jack O'Connel which is less scholarly but still a good read and some good new insights.

A book by a friend but a fantastic book nonetheless. Having had a great debut there was a lot of live up to ... and I was all ready to be more critical of PT. However the book won me over with ease.If I was to compare it to anything it would be to the Empire Strikes Back (in line with the contemporary analogies that PT has used in the series). There is a lot of setup happening and lot of complex things going on with respect to time and space. It is a very entertaining read, with a lot of content that pushes the story along at full speed.At the end of it all we are left with some answers but a lot of questions, waiting with bated breath for the next installment of this story. Knowing PT's committed and disciplined approach I am sure we will not have to wait long.* The review is as written on my Goodreads page.

I am really into this series. It has been a highly original and entertaining story. It's four stars is based on the story alone (I say this because the writing style is good, not exceptional, but definitely good, and I think this author's style will definitely improve and evolve). It's extremely well thought out and plotted. There are so many ways that this could have been a disaster (time-travel, time-stoppage, a place outside of place - which I'm still trying to wrap my head around but somehow Hylton makes it work) but not once was I confused or in disbelief. I can't wait to get to Book 3!

I'm a huge book worm. I've always got a book on hand, so I forget the ones that don't stand out fairly quickly after I've finished one. This series has always stood out. I waited around for the second book just like I'll be waiting on the third. Kept me on the edge of my seat!! Definitely recommend

It's a rare treat to find a story this original! No recycled vampires and zombies here. P. T. Hylton scares us with monsters we've never met, all homegrown in his fertile imagination. He creeps us out in a world we've never been to, "A Place Without Shadows." It's hard to give this book its due without giving away its secrets. And there are secrets aplenty in this sequel. Readers of "Regulation 19" will discover that what happened in Rook Mountain was just the tip of the iceberg. It's a riveting plot, enlivened by believable and likeable characters. I loved the ending and can't wait to read the conclusion of this series next spring.

The content of this illustrated book is very good, following the treasured Dark Tower story of Stephen King. Unfortunately, there are pages I can't read because the pages are too small on my Android tablet. Those I can read are wonderful. There is no sizing ability that I can find for the pages except for font size, which has no effect on images such as these.I tried to bring this book up on my computer with the Kindle app thinking it might be large enough to read all the pages, however, I simply received an error saying it couldn't load this format. It's possible that an authentic Kindle tablet would allow re-sizing, however I can't verify that.I love the Dark Tower story well enough that I don't regret purchasing these books but it would be helpful if all the pages were readable.

We faithful readers of the Dark Tower books have always wondered about the battle of Jericho Hill, which was mentioned many times in the novels but never gone into in depth. What we did know was that this was a climactic battle, and the forces of evil defeated the dedicated band of gunslingers, leaving only Roland to survive. There was also mention of the horn of Arthur Eld, without more explanation. This excellent graphic novel fills in the details of this sad portion of the Dark Tower saga. Once again we have excellent scripting and tremendous artistry combined to present to the reader a complete and engrossing book, even if we are not pleased with how the plot goes. It's compelling and, as usual with these works, the reader is hooked from the first page and just goes through the whole book in one sitting. It's a work that should satisfy even the most rabid King fan, and it gives us the background knowledge to more fully understand the Dark Tower mythology. I assumed that this book would take us to the beginning of the first Dark Tower novel, but I see now that is not the case. That being said, prepare for further volumes in this timeless tale that will eventually take us to when "the man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed".

I pre-ordered this 5 months before it was available for sale. As soon as I received it I opened my Amazon package and read the whole thing. I thought this was another great chapter of the Dark Tower saga. As the entire DT story goes it's not the typical western, sci-fi, adventure, action, drama, so on type of story and it's best attributes are it's flawed characters, deep seeded story line, the underlying community feeling, gritty reality, and fearless dives into the tumultuous world of Mid-World. This chapter did not disappoint in the least. I immediately pre-ordered the next hardcover bound edition to come out in January 2011 and can't wait to see it's interpretation and continuation of the story. I'm just waiting for the DT graphic novel that ends with the words "the man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed" to truly cap off a great adventure!

Very good but not the same as the books I read so long ago. Still a fun read. Reread all these after seeing the movie. I didn't like the movie. These books would be very difficult to put on screen without losing the story. The ending of the book seemed more of a cop out than a real ending but it is Mr. King's story to do with as he wishes.

As a huge fan of the Dark Tower books, I was very interested in this 'prequel'. Understanding that it is a graphic novel, and that it is based on King's characters--but not written by King--it dealt with the settings, story, and characters well enough. I'll certainly be ready volume 2.

Another wonderful read on the continuing journey of Roland and his get, very sad ending, but the faithful reader knows what is in store for those that wronged him!!!

While the German Operation Typhoon, intended to capture Moscow in October 1941, has received a good deal of coverage in Second World War literature, the Battle of Kalinin which was an important sub-operation within Typhoon has received scant attention. Researchers Jack Radey and Charles Sharp have corrected this gap in Eastern Front historiography with The Defense of Moscow: The Northern Flank. This book represents a quantum leap in the English language coverage on this aspect of Typhoon and serves to alter entrenched depictions of the Battle of Kalinin as a mere sideshow. Both authors display a superb grasp of the German and Russian source material, which they seamlessly weave together into a very tight and compelling narrative. Although the writing style is a bit wooden at times - causing me to have to re-read some critical passages several times - this is the kind of book that is beloved of history aficionados, full of new information and packed with primary source research and historical documentation from both sides. Overall, The Defense of Moscow: The Northern Flank is a superb addition to any Eastern Front library and highly recommended. The book consists of ten chronological chapters and begins with the opening phase of Operation Typhoon on 2 October 1941. Wisely, the authors do not belabor the preliminaries and move rapidly toward the main focus on the Battle of Kalinin. Readers should not expect an overview of all of Typhoon and realize that the tighter focus allows for greater detail. By the third chapter, the authors detail the capture of Kalinin by the 1. Panzer-Division on 14 October, which then sets in motion the Soviet counter-response. The narrative has a nice action-reaction angle going for it, with both sides having the initiative at certain points. One very interesting chapter covers the raid by the Soviet 21st Tank Brigade on Kalinin on 17 October, which is usually not even covered by a footnote in other books. Subsequently, the German advance up the Torzhok road and the encirclement of the 1. Panzer-Division - which lost most of its tanks and vehicles - is another example of an episode from Typhoon that often goes unnoticed. The authors have mined memoirs from both sides, particularly Pavel Rotmistrov's, to produce a very revealing portrait of the Battle of Kalinin from each sides' perspective - a rarity in Eastern Front literature. Each day, from 14-24 October is covered in separate sections, in considerable detail. I was a bit disappointed by the maps, which were often not very helpful for understanding the flow of battle. However, the authors made up for this with a nice selection of photos, detailed foot notes and bibliography, as well as lengthy appendices. The authors conclude that Kalinin was more than a sideshow, but a serious attempt by the Germans to mount a double envelopment to link-up with Heeresgruppe Nord in order to envelope the Northwest Front. That may be true, but this detracts from the idea that the fighting at Kalinin was relevant to the Battle of Moscow - it almost casts it as a separate action. It is clear that the fighting at Kalinin diverted significant German forces away from Moscow, thereby contributing to the failure of Typhoon. The authors conclude with a very useful analytic chapter that sums up the meaning and results of the battle.

You will not have to be an Eastern Front expert, to enjoy The Defense of Moscow 1941: The Northern Flank, but you will have to have a decided interest in the subject matter. The book is unwaveringly focused on the opening stages of the battle of Moscow on the northern flank. As such, it does not cover, in any meaningful way, fighting immediately in front of Moscow or on the southern flank. It is a fairly balanced account, covering both Soviet and German efforts in and around Kalinin from approximately October 7th to very early November 1941. So, if you are looking for a general history of the Moscow campaign, this is not the book for you. If, however, you enjoy well written, carefully researched operational level history within a specific area, you'll appreciate this. There isn't much about grand strategy, and, while touching on individual actions and personalities, it is not intended to look deeply at the behavior, feelings, and tactics of the individual soldier or his low level unit either. The focus falls right around the corps, division, regimental level of action. Not a lot of lofty prose, but the facts as could best be determined from the limited original sources.The book consists of approximately 177 pages of text, with 10 maps (5 full page, and 5 covering 1/3rd of a page). In addition, there are approximately 24 pages of end notes, 15 pages of order of battle, and 46 pages of directives, orders and reports. There are 8 pages of photographs, all of which appear germane to the subject. It is understood that good maps from the period are hard to come by. As the writers point out, naming of towns and villages was inconsistent in documentation, maps from the era were very poor, and some locations named in orders have never been accurately located on a map. Acknowledging those problems, I'd like to see more maps, with more details. What they present is solid, but you rarely find a military book with too many maps. A real positive is that the writers direct you to a web-site which includes 1:250,000 scale maps of the area from approximately 1954 (you will want to look at map NO 36-12 if you look at the site. This will give you a much better feel for the terrain.) The end notes are excellent. As with end notes in general, it is annoying to have to flip back and forth (prefer footnotes), but these are worth your time. Unfortunately, the writers had to work out the order of battle with the limited and sometimes contradictory records from 1941. Of necessity, the order of battle constitutes a snapshot in time, but the research is the best available and clearly an effort was made here to get it right. A real gem of the book is the extensive "Directives, Orders and Reports" section. While the documents are of value in themselves, the writers lead you through the implications with comments to each order that remind you of the ground truth as each of the orders was issued. In this way you see the influence of the fog of war, and, seemingly at times, willful disregard of the situation on the ground at higher levels.The format is conventional and workmanlike, opening with a general breakdown of the situation, proceeding to cover events in chronological order and ending with some summarizing conclusions on the action as a whole. One of the writers' primary aims was to show that the German strategy committed considerable forces to encircling Soviet forces on the Northern flank, as opposed to dedicating those forces to a direct attack on Moscow. In this aim, they succeed. The writers also do a fine job of showing how utterly exhausted the forces of both sides were at this point and how both managed to proceed only by incredible feats of endurance and discipline. Logistics were a nightmare, and particularly tenuous for the Germans, a fact which their high command seemed unwilling to accept. A lack of fuel, in particular, hampering operations is a repeated theme. The writers conclude that this unwillingness to see the reality may, at least in part, have been a reflection of the upper echelon's wishful thinking about logistical constraints that started in the planning phase of Barbarossa and were never adequately addressed. In addition, the command was not willing to give up stereotypes concerning the Red Army's ability and willingness to fight. Kicking in the door of the "rotten structure", as Hitler deemed the Soviet system, proved to be a far more difficult task than those in charge would admit to their soldiers at the front. A result of this arrogance was, in part, this painful set of actions around Kalinin. Very well done piece of historical writing.

The authors made superb use of original materials and archives, and presented a detailed and coherent picture of actual events and strategies and combat capabilities of the participants in this usually misunderstood and under-examined portion in the campaign to take Moscow in 1941. Covering actions around Kalinin from the beginning of October through the 24th in great detail, the book is nonetheless very readable and has helpful footnotes. It leaves the reader hoping the authors will continue their examination in a second volume covering the final acts of the campaign in the Kalinin region in November and December 1941.

This is an indepth study of a part of the war that often goes unnoticed.

So having this one there was a great way to circumvent him and use valuable time to read valuable and deeper content. Because the stories and jokes are short, it also was conclusive for the time spent at that location. It turned out to be a popular reason to stop by our house when in town for the necessities.

This book is totally awesome and well worth your time to purchase and READ! In today's hurry, hurry world I still like to just sit and read a real book that can teach me something I didn't know a few minutes ago. Please take the time to instill in your children or Grandchildren the joy of books! They will be much Happier Folks in the future! March 19, 2019

As a technical person, I have tried later in my life to go back and pick up a bit of the humanities -- to try to answer some of those questions we all have about life and living. I started to read and listen to some light reviews of philosophy and see if I could begin to grasp some of the basic questions and perhaps some of the answers. I am almost certain that one cannot do it by self study, but I have listened and read enough to know some of the basic ideas. And on top of that, I love the "man goes in a bar" jokes. Any book which combines two of the things I really enjoy as this book does has to move to the top of my list. When I saw this book I had to have it. I sat done and read it in about an hour and I loved it. I laughed and laughed and I recommend it to anyone looking to dip a toe into philosophy. Serious students will likely scoff at it, but for the rest of us, the ideas are here for the taking. Buy this book.

It's funny but I wouldn't recommend it for any real insights or knowledge. The book lacks structure. It gives a very high overview of different theories, but I don't see the value in this. Maybe, I was looking for something deeper.

Although I felt like a fool sitting here all by myself laughing myself to tears over jokes some of which are older than I am (and that's pretty old), I enjoyed every minute of it. And I think there was a glimmer of understanding regarding philosophy as an added treat. I wish I knew somebody who has the same mind-bend as I so I could recommend this book. Loved it!!

Very cleaver and funny, but look out you actually might learn something. I have it on my kindle and read it randomly while in Doctors reception area and love the looks on the other patients faces as I am laughing out loud ! I mean who laughs at the Doctors !?!

This book is thoroughly entertaining, while yet managing to teach some of the basics of philosophy. This isn't JUST a joke book (though the jokes are great) but you can tell that the authors actually love their subject and want you to learn something about it. You're not going to qualify for a degree in philosophy by reading this, but you're going to absorb some of the concepts and terminology and maybe even be inspired to dig deeper -- while laughing the whole way. It's a masterful piece of writing in that these guys have managed to serve a fairly substantial "meal" in the guise of a light snack -- call it an appetizer. I'd have given it five stars on the basis of entertainment, but gave it four because I wouldn't have minded a little more meat. However, I do recommend it for anyone who would enjoy a "painless" but relatively superficial introduction to philospy and I already bought one copy for a friend.

My husband thoroughly enjoyed the book as a short easy travel read. It presented philosophical perspectives with funny anecdotes to illustrate them.
