This, combined with Stephen Shore's similar-but-complimentary *The Nature of Photographs* would be a good bibliography for a beginner's class on photography - in which the students must use a fully-automatic camera - maybe a smartphone?These two books complement each other - makes sense, IIRC Szarkowski was some kind of mentor to Shore. Also they complement the approximately 100% of how-to books on photography that never mention how to do photography. Most photography books exclusively cover technical stuff that in 2016 anyone can easily master in an afternoon.Of course there is a surfeit of writing about *about* photography, but IMHO those are for the second semester of the course of study I'm proposing. Maybe Sontag and Barthes would be the texts for that class. I think it's good for a photographer to limit that kind of reading, anyway - too much photography nowadays has photography as its subject.When I became deeply interested in photography as a hobby, I tore through lots of books and videos, and I always had a sense like, "Yeah, but that doesn't explain what ____ is doing," (whoever was my favorite photographer that week). I don't know where I got that sense, but I also sense that many photographers are missing that sense. This book would instill that sense in anyone, I think.I found Shore's book early on - I wish I had found *The Photographer's Eye* at the same time. I think I would have developed much faster into a photographer with direction and purpose.

I was excited to receive this collection of photographs assembled by MOMA curator John Szarkowski. At first, I was a little disappointed because I was expecting more commentary on the images- I imagined a publication where Szarkowski would deconstruct the images, point out observations and relate them to photo theory. I looked forward to getting in the mind of the master. Once I got over this disappointment, I picked the book up again and realized what an idiot I had been for wanting that to begin with."The Photographer's Eye" is the perfect title for this book- It doesn't overwhelm you with essays explaining how to see, how to think and what each image "means". Instead, it presents 5 expertly curated collections of photographs (The Thing Itself, The Detail, The Frame, Time, and Vantage Point) and it gives the viewer just a tiny bit of written information to consider regarding that collection. The viewer is then forced to visually consider and decipher each image (as well as the collection as a whole) and make those wonderful little discoveries on their own. In effect, to see and understand using the photographer's eye rather than the writer's word. Man, Szarkowski was a genius.I can't recommend it highly enough. Beautiful images, beautiful sequence, beautifully curated.

Wonderful book! This is not a 'how to' in any way, shape or form, but it is a book that will make you think about what goes into your images. The author breaks photographs into 5 sections and writes a little about each section, then provides a number of amazing, historical examples.This is a book that I've already read through 3 times shortly after I bought it, and I'm sure that I will return to it over and over for inspiration.I've been a photographer since the late 70's but this book brought me new insight.

A number of reviews have focused on the lack of narrative in this book. This assessment is correct. However, the book is a major chronology of the power and influence of photography, and is a visual treat. The quality of reproduction reflects its price and heritage, nevertheless, it contains, in a structure way, many powerful images. This is a very important book, but its style and contents are not for everyone. In particular, it contrasts significantly in style and tempo, with Szarkowski's other well known work - "Looking at Photographs - 100 Pictures from the Collection of the Museum of Modern Art".

But the small text is of seminal importance for the understanding and the future of photography.Firstly, John Szarkowski draws a parallel between the art that forged photography - painting - and photography in itself. A comparison between the inclusion of a painting canvas and the exclusion of a camera viewfinder.He does not dismiss the photograph as something lost in the space and time, but as something in motion, even if only for 1/30 of a second. A Cartier Bresson's "decisive moment", not in the sense that is commonly accepted by most(a dramatic climax), but a visual one.The author emphasizes that this is a new art and needs to be still discovered in many senses. The photographers need to discover new meanings and ways to express themselves in new images.John Szarkoswi was the curator of photography of the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York for many years. In the exhibits he put into action his thoughts, inclusively promoting color photography.As a photographer, I have learned a lot in those few pages.One of the conclusions that I draw is that the film and digital controversy is innocuous. Whatever image you capture through the viewfiender is photography.

John writes well so it is as fun to read his descriptions as it is fun to look through the photographs. Photographs aren't possible to describe so the text is brief, but it is invaluable in understanding them. For an art student, this has what you need to work towards bettering. Also look at John's other books; I keep my collection of them together.

I am an artist, educator and historian of photography. When this edition arrived I was amazed at how great the print quality was and the images were stunning. It's like my eyes were hungry for each image and I devoured it front to back and again and again. The essays by Szarkowski are not to be missed, but take up a smaller portion of the book. Would be great for making slides to teach photo history because the prints are so good.

About the Author

Joe Sledge is a North Carolina native who grew up on the Outer Banks, "about a mile from where the Wright Brothers flew." While attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he developed a love of exploration, road trips and finding hidden bits of history. After graduation, he traveled extensively, crossing the country twice, and traveling from Mexico to Canada. I got this book thinking it was a cookbook. As a fan of Choi's groundbreaking Kogi Truck, I was really excited to see that he had written a cookbook. I was initially met with serious disappointment as I thumbed through the book and saw the ratio of prose to recipe grow bigger and bigger. Bigger than I was expecting at any rate.But, fan of CHoi's food that I am, I decided to start reading it anyway. The Introduction is so gracious that it prompted me on to next chapter. Before I knew it, I was reading the next, and the next, and the next, because Choi's writing style is immensely readable. It draws you in before you have time to realize that you've just read six chapters nonstop. In fact, his writing style is so enjoyable that I can almost forget about his liberal use of F-bombs (t's just not my thing). I cannot, however, quite forgive his use of certain bathroom-related words that should never be used in context with food. Never. Ever. Period. Bleh!Choi's story, and that of his family, is one of wonderful ups, sorrowful downs and gobsmacking surprises, especially if what you know about Choi is where he has landed. It also fully explains Choi's insanely creative grasp of "fusion" food and why the Kogi Truck, which in and of itself was a stroke of brilliance, amassed a cult following in record time.As for the recipes, there are quite a lot of them that will be impossible to make without access to markets, like 99 Ranch in LA, that sell serious Asian food products. If you live in a city that has a Korean section, you have it made.There are plenty of really good recipes that don't require hard-to-find ingredients, as well as some that were a surprise to find in the book - like French Onion Soup (with a splash of Calvados), Pork Schnitzel, and Seared Scallops with Chive Beurre Blanc - but that fit in because they are integral to Choi's culinary journey.There are also a few that must be aimed at new cooks - like Roasted Sweet Potatoes (sweet potatoes, salt) and a standard Club Sandwich - because, otherwise, they are head-scratchers.That said, one of my favorite recipes in the book is one of the simplest, and thus the one I find myself making most often - Choi's spin on Ramen Noodles. Stupid-easy, but just plain good!Likewise, his recipe for Kalbi - easy and honestly beats any that I've had in a restaurant.Ultimately, Choi's book is not only a journey into his life and his cooking, but a culinary tour of LA's amazingly diverse, ever evolving food scene.

For starters an absorbing read that beautifully describes a vibrant diverse culture in a way that makes it familiar. It would be worth the purchase of that were all there was to it. The recipes that compliment each chapter are a bonus. Ingredients methods and alternatives are clearly presented and the results are wonderful. If you love Asian-Korean-Mexican food solo or in combination, try this. Chef Choi's voice is a bit like Bourdain's so be prepared for some language and some living on the edge tales..

The recipes I have made from this book have been good. I took away stars because I really dislike the layout. Recipes are thrown in throughout his story. This makes it really difficult to flip to the recipe you want to use (have to go to the index every time) or to just browse recipes to see what you feel like making. But I will say my family really enjoys the buttermilk pancakes from this book and it’s now my go to pancake.

I bought this book ostensibly for my husband, after he recommended I listen to Mr. Choi's NPR interview. The interview he gave on Fresh Air was smart and funny and engaging, and even though I don't live in a town with a bustling food truck population, I have read my fair share about them. This book is has great recipes, wonderful and at time heartbreaking stories from Mr. Choi's own life, and these great, color saturated photos. This is one book that I'd recommend the hardcover over the Kindle version, just so you can lay it out and pore over it. The recipes are varied, interesting, and for the novice as well as the pro. You may not want to buy it for your mom if she is offended by pot smoking and f-bombs, but everyone else will adore it. (Your mom will probably like it, too.) I love a cookbook that's as great to cook from as to read!

Cooking, reading, amazed and fascinated. This book will spark creativity by association but curiosity will be satisfied by this no holds barred autobiography. Best cookbook but also life story, lyrical and profane beyond crazy. Amazeballs.

I discovered Roy Choi during a stay at The Line hotel in Los Angeles. Choi operates the hotel's eateries, including, "POT", located just off the hotel lobby. I was wowed by an Asian-fusion dinner at the restaurant, choosing from the bizarre menu offerings with help from a knowledgeable server. Although many of the ingredients were foreign to me, it was such an interesting and beautifully crafted affair. I also had an incredible meal via room service and breakfast in the lobby restaurant before departing. I was so impressed with the food that I researched the chef and found his book on Amazon when I got home. The book is very much in keeping to Choi's roots in LA's Koreatown, complete with many "doable" recipes and various stories from the chef's years growing up in the neighborhood.

Loved it. I was hungry all the time for his receipes. I heard his story on NPR which inspired me to get the book on my kindle. I like that he shared his life story as the books goes along. Would love to meet him or eat at his restaurants

Very entertaining read.

I haven't tried the recipes yet but enjoyed reading Roy's personal history. The recipes look doable since there are a number of Asian stores in my area.

It’s a quick read and hits very good points about leaving a legacy and thinking big. The story about how the author has been managing his health is very inspiring and resonates with me as I care about nutrition and overall health.I loved how the book has positive and impactful quotes that make the point author is trying to make very clear. The book has made me question why I had not thought of leaving a legacy until now or atleast not very clearly. Overall, loved the book and would recommend it to anyone looking for motivation to get going.

This book is a quick and easy read. It was very insightful and even more encouraging! I myself do not suffer from Crohn’s, but I do have type 2 diabetes. I have had many on and off again relationships with plans of conquering and overcoming this. The Author is very transparent from the jump and his vulnerability helps me as the reader relate and plan. Make me feel inspired and encouraged.

I read Conquest in one sitting. Chapter 17 ( Leaving a Lasting Legacy) put all the preceding chapters in perspective for me. When unmotivated I can be very motivated when someone else will benefit from my actions. Thinking of what I want my legacy to be has been life-changing. Such a quick and easy read delivering a huge impact on ones life. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking a higher meaning to life.

A great book for parents who want to apply Tuina therapy to their kids and reduce their dependency on doctors and medicine. The techniques are explained in a clear manner and also accompanied with an introduction that explains how to plan the course(s) of treatment. For each complaint (cough, diarrhea etc...) the treatment is based on the "pattern", which is the pathology (based on Chinese medicine's theory) that caused the complain in question. The right pattern can be diagnosed through different symptoms (fever, stool, mucous, breath etc) or causes (for example, diarrhea due to food poisoning) so the parent should very carefully observe the child and choose the right pattern so as to choose the right treatment. It's not always crisp clear though, so give it time and compare patterns over and over again.What I did miss is an appendix explaining pediatric TCM in general - an specifically the importance of supplementing the spleen-stomach system. This can explain the reader why, for example, many treatment start with supplementing the spleen. Also, I think it should be clearer that in Chinese medicine "fever" can be also just feeling warm, and not necessary fever as defined by pediatricians and detectable through a thermometer. I believe this is what is meant by "slight fever" in the symptoms? Perhaps the author can clarify that.This book is empowering parents to use Tuina, and does a much better job than the YouTube videos out there which in comparison, are not always as accurate and clear.

Highly advanced level book, but quite practical with some very good ideas like a dynamic-duck-typed implementation of a recursive XML parser. Plenty of excellent guidelines on things to check for in your code base: data encapsulation. Great advanced but practical overview of Threading/Async, Parallel LINQ. Again, lots of things to check for and review with high level but inexperienced students like Mutable structures, Value/Reference types pitfalls, overloading base types( a nono). Only downside for me is I usually solve the problems addressed individually by this book by having a good class design in the first place, and that's hard to teach, but this will give you a starting point for 'the red marker'. A couple of things I never would think to do, like pass an anonymous type into a generic function will kind of blow your mind. Or use dynamic to coerce a Contravariant structure into what is supposed to be an implicit conversion operator.
