Good book on rafting. Covers all the essentials and a little more. Wish it included inflatable kayaks but I see the author has written another book on that. Too bad they were not combined as much of the info would be redundant. Overall a great book. Can't wait for the spring runoff.

I enjoyed the book. It fits well into an art criticism void: readable, well paced, makes the large connections for the reader across the centuries. But the images he decided best demonstrated his points, the ones he featured in the plates, are all male artists. All. Male. Artists.All.That significantly diminishes this writer's otherwise good work. What was the writer, the editor, the publisher all thinking? This reflects poorly on everyone, at each stage of this book. Do better.

Mr. Esplund writes compellingly about modern, contemporary (and not so contemporary) art, and really helps you to understand how to approach it. He discusses the "language" of art and how artists think, and he beautifully and earnestly describes his own experiences in front of art. It helps to look up the artworks he mentions (if they're not in the book) to see what he's getting at. This book is full of deep thinking and wonderful insights.

This is a wonderful book and it should be required reading for art students. In the age of social media people are loosing their ability to look and focus (and to read). Esplund reminds us that painting isn't about craft and "realism" but instead about experience and reflection.

David Dean Bottrell has written an extraordinary book about making it as a working actor. Writers and any creative person will find much that rings true in his account of working for 35 years as an actor/writer/director/producer both in the theater and on camera. He had me rolling on floor with the parrot story and pondering our unrecognized interconnectedness in his story from the grocery aisle. Not since William Goldman has an author taken us behind the scenes of what life is really like in Hollywood and New York. I give his book five stars!

I had the privilege of being one of David Dean Bottrell's acting students at UCLA. He always had insightful critiques of our scenes. It was an absolute pleasure to pick up his book which acts not only as a guide offering advice and helpful tips on how to be a working actor, but also as a memoir giving us a glimpse on how it was for him and his own personal experience, as everyone's journey will be different. After reading his book I'm ready to start tackling my goals, so I can eventually quit that safety job and work as an actor, writer, and director, doing what I love. An absolute must read for those in the business struggling but willing to work hard and take some risks.

Okay, so I’m not an actor. Or an actor wannabe. Or even in the entertainment industry. But I live in Los Angeles and, it’s true, you can’t swing a cat without hitting an actor (or “writer/producer/show runner/script supervisor). I admire creative people, but wondered what made them tick. Then I read this book. I LOVE THIS BOOK. It’s funny, witty, and touching. David Dean Bottrell hit his mark.

This is a frank exploration of what it means to pursue an acting career today. Though chock full of practical advice, it is also an amusing and forthright memoir. David has clearly been there and experienced the highs and lows of this rewarding and frustrating life in the entertainment business. He imparts his knowledge and experience with a refreshing candor that is both illuminating and fun to read.

As an acting coach, David will push you no matter how talented you are. That is why I happily paid him monthly for just under a decade(He moved back to New York from L.A. or it would have been longer). When I have an audition, I will close my eyes and ask myself, what would DDB say...? His words come from experience. I found him because of a casting who compared me to him. I looked him up, called him and never looked back.

Businesses, Hackers, Hactivists, Governments, Law enforcement, Criminals, Mafia, Con Artists, Bullies, Ex es, Stalkers (almost everyone) can access intimate details about your life and they don't even have to try hard to get that info.All the gadgets you use generate tons of data which is stored in systems accessible to almost everyone in the world.This data exists 'forever' and never gets deleted even if you decided to close all your online accounts.You don't even need to have online presence, your name, address, credit information, vehicle plates; everything is tracked and stored in some database somewhere.This data is then get sold, sliced, diced, hacked and shared with (out) your consent. Have you ever read the ‘Terms of Service’ completely before you clicked that ‘I Agree’ button?So far the book doesn't provide any solutions. Hopefully there will be some solution before the last page.

I have been involved with computer, network, and Internet security since the mid '70s. I started programming operating systems in 1968. This book collects all the threats we have faced historically in the first dozen chapters. Then Mr Goodman paints a very clear picture of the security and privacy threats we face in the next five to ten years. This book is a must read for everyone. Granted some parts of the book might get a little technical for some folks. Don't that stop you from reading it. It is written in a very clear and concise fashion that all readers will walk away from reading this book with their eyes wide open. Not only does Mr. Goodman identify the present and future threats, but he also offers good strategies and best practices that you can employ to mitigate a good many of the threats.

Important book to read as it provides a comprehensive overview of the types of "attacks" that are occurring on the internet, many of which you have never heard of (I consider myself a tech-saavy person, but was surprised how little I knew). Was introduced to Marc's book from Tim Ferriss' podcast. Marc does a great job of explaining how the antivirus software companies are always a step behind the hackers and what we as citizens can be doing to better protect ourselves online (e.g. password management programs, two-factor authentication, etc). Also includes fascinating anecdotes and stories from the government (e.g. hacking the Iranian nuclear program). Should be required reading for all adults given the amount of time we spend "connected" and online

What an eye opener. I am far from computer savvy , I do do try to keep abreast of current events and am a avid reader. I am very suspicious of the future as far as new technology is concerned. Its all pushed towards us promising us new and wonderful things but not far under these promises lurks the ability of those making promises to sneak into our private lives and uncover private and personal issues. I figure if they have made a way in they have a way out, they call it a "back door". I call it a invasion of privacy. This book really opens ones eye to the future possibilities of all the new technology. I highly recommend everyone to read it, if not all just skip around like I did. I am sure you will want to read more.

There are some places where the Internet just doesn't belong. This book tells of pacemakers being hacked, planes being landed remotely, and power grids shut down by kids. And the stories get much, much freakier. I've long wondered why society has rushed to make everything web-connected without questioning (or preventing) the very real dangers such technology exposes us to daily. And apparently this is just the beginning, as our entire lives are being run by the Internet. I used to laugh at George Orwell's book "1984" -- this book shows that it's really happening.

Scary acct of the many cyber crimes out there. The author certainly knows his stuff, but the book goes on and on, reporting horrible cyber crimes, but does not give any solutions until the very end of the book. After reading the lengthy accts of crimes, I was tempted to give up on computers. I would have liked to see more coverage of possible solutions and ways for average people to avoid trouble.

Disclosures: I do not know the author; I do not have any financial interest in this book; I did buy the book from Amazon. However, I was pleasantly surprise to see "Future Crimes" in an airport book stand. Finally, CEO's will be getting the message more clearly. This book does a good job of cataloging the security risks we all face and providing some possible remedies. The first 348 pages are a compendium of security risks. If you are in the security business, most will be common knowledge. If not, these pages provide a good overview. I can summarize by saying: everything can be hacked; everything will be hacked. The challenge of this part of the book is that some of the vulnerabilities have been patched and others have appeared. I enjoyed the last two chapters, which provide some possible "ways out" for security risks. These include: holding the software industry accountable; reclaiming privacy by paying for the many "free" services we use; more education; adding human centric design to security; meaningful public-private cooperation and many others. These pages were the best for me. Recommended for reading and possibly purchasing.

Jeff Cox is the author of 21 books on food, wine, and gardening, including Gardening with Biochar, From Vines to Wines, and Cellaring Wine. He was the managing editor of Organic Gardening for many years, and currently serves as a contributing editor to The Tasting Panel, SOMM Journal, Clever Root, and Horticulture magazines, and writes a monthly garden feature for the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. I like this book, and had owned a prior edition. I bought this edition because of new sections. WATCH OUT -- the copy that I bought says on the cover (and on the title page) that it is the 5th edition, yet it is missing all of the supposed "new sections" that are purported to be in the 5th edition. The back cover says "The fifth edition includes profiles of successful home winemakers, as well as sections on ice wines, port-style wines, late-harvest or dessert wines, cold-hardy grapes for northern states, and sparkling wines." Only one of these sections is present in the book (a section on sparkling wines) -- all of the rest are missing. I am disappointed, and will likely return the book. It is possible (likely) that this is a case of a manufacturing error by the publisher... putting the new cover on an older printing of the interior. (Since the 5th edition is said to have come out in March 2015, and I purchased this in May 2015). I am returning the book.

The book is a general overview of winemaking and growing, which it does pretty well. What I didn't enjoy was the author discrediting several styles of wine just because he doesn't like them. If an Italian reads this, they would be pretty upset at how he describes grappa as being "nearly always a bad drink." Also, he describes rosés as being "almost always ordinary." It's OK to not like something, but descriptions such as those discourage people from experimenting with those styles. A more objective opinion throughout the book would've been more enjoyable. Overall, it's a decent introduction to winemaking and growing grapes.

Best I have seen on pruning. All other books I have looked at throw words at you without explaining what each refers to. This one not only says what the technical words are, but also gives drawings. Some reviews complain that not all pruning systems are covered. If you are growing a few vines in your back yard, this book will do you just fine. If you are growing commercially, you should be consulting local government agencies. But even then, you might find this book will help you understand the more advanced or up to date advice.

This book is supremely well written. The step by step instructions actually give me a hint of confidence to try and develop a vineyard on my 5 acres. So far im planning to plant only 2 acres but I've been overwhelmed by the process. This book helps me feel educated in the proper workflow required to take on a project like this. Now the hard part. What varietals to plant and how much of each. Also need to find some professional help. With the appendices and references stated in this book finding help will be much easier. All I can say to Jeff Cox is thank you for providing a treasure trove of info at such a slight cost. The read itself is payback enough for what the book cost. The info in here is priceless. I hope you are getting $50 a book for use as a college text.

Loved the book! I have read many books on the subject and work within the wine industry. I think its a great introduction to all the parts in the process of growing grapes, and making wine. And hey, who doesn't like wine? If your just interested in how your favorite wine actually came to be, have an interest in making your own wine at home, or are involved in any way in the industry its a great way to broaden your understanding. From working the grapes, to pouring the wine I feel it's important to understand just what it takes to make that glass of your favorite wine. Wine aficionados are sure to find a new respect for that next glass between the covers. Great read, cheers!

There's more detailed guides out there for professional growers, but for the amateur grower just wanting to get started with a backyard vineyard, its well worth the read. There's some romantic wine tasting silliness in here that may turn you off, and some servings of cheese such as when he describes his wife crushing grapes that I could do without, but it was enough to get me started with some vines.

I've read a little already to learn which grapes work best in AZ. It is very informative; especially for .CA residents. It should do well for my wife's mini vineyard!

This book is the ticket to making wine at home , easy to understand . I'm a first time wine maker and I have 40 gal of 4 types of wine ready to rack . I'm lucky to have access to grapes from Napa, Solano , and contra Costa with vines in my sack yard . Jeff Cox did a good job with this book . And the price is right , Love it like my vines and wine
