My wife and I went to see the film. After we saw it, I ordered the book from Amazon. I have read and read it several times since. It is extremely well done and the photographs are excellent and used appropriately. This is a story that, had it not been released as a witnessed based documentary, would never have been believed. It is a wonderful story that restores faith in the good that humans have within them. I want to thank all those who took part in the project and look forward to the release of the DVD.

Great story - would be good for children to read.

This is such a wonderful book! Even though it is basically a kids book, it can teach adults too. I had heard about this project, but I didn't realize that it was so involved and reached into other countries. It's also a such a coincidence that while the paper clip project was taking place the terrible events of 9/11/01 also happened. These events show that hate and terror are still being peddled by some people and must be fought at all cost. No matter what, even with all our differences people are really more alike than we are different. We need tolerance and understanding of each other more than ever.

Excellent account of one school making a difference. This is a topic everyone should learn about.

He keeps a humble position by combining his own wisdom with the knowledge of specialists in their field.The only somewhat negative aspect is the book's title and the layout: Do not be turned off by the photos. The book is full of pictures of retired people enjoying life whereas this book really addresses everyone at every age. Bowden himself writes that it is not about how long we live but that we live a healthy, happy life for as long as possible. I found the book very creative and the 'place' was well described. I had a hard time connecting to the characters and I felt like some of the character elements were only plot devices with no other reason for existing. I was really excited about the idea of the book, it didn't live up to my hopes. This author has promise though and I hope he continues to hone his writing skill.

The writing style is... ...ummm… ...adequate, and the story is slow to start. The coincidences that drive the plot are a little bit of a stretch. On the other hand, conceptually, the post-climate collapse world that it creates is phenomenal, and once things get going, it is genuinely original and quite good. In a world of endless sequels and derivatives, that's more than enough to make it worth a read.

The idea that much of humanity would be living on offshore oil rig-type structures is an interesting one, but the author never provides an explanation, much less a plausible science-based one, for how the world got into the state described. The past is revealed in glimpses.There are hardly any cisgender heterosexual characters and yet the world of the novel is hellishly overpopulated. It is unclear how a world in which most people are either gay or gender-fluid or both can produce so many children.It is a fun mirror of our own world that nearly all of the rich people are urban real estate owners, but not enough fun to keep the reader motivated. This is a tough book to slog through.

Like the chaotic city where it is set, the novel's initial (deliberate) incoherence, which is really a rush of strange detail and invention, begins to resolve into something more familiar.In a nutshell, a strange woman with an orca familiar appears in the city and becomes the subject of much speculation and fear. The family then seeks to obtain its end (no spoliers) but is met with no shortage of abrupt and gruesome deaths (Miller is not afraid to kill off key and beloved characters!).Miller has invented here a merciless world, but with enough redemptive characters to give the bleakness a rest and leave room for hope. Although I thought the last portion meandered perhaps a bit too long after the jailbreak and some of the class and gender conflict hung a little heavy on the prose (hence no 5 stars), Miller's imagination left me breathless.

Blackfish City is an easily digestible novel because the material is exceptional and the pace is quick enough to captivate attention. I highly appreciate original fiction, and was apprehensive about the similarities to Phillip Pullmans "His Dark Materials", however, as the author delved further into specific topics (I don't want to spoil!) it was easier for me to separate the two. I noticed many reviews critiqued the editing, and I agree. Luckily, the need for a strong edit doesn't distract from this unique work. Despite the plethora of content and themes, there aren't too many loose ends. I hope the author continues to write in this universe, but if not, I'll definitely follow his spirited work.

I loved this book! Starts off with a number of different stories of different characters. Then the stories converge into a whole story. Some of the characters come together. Some die and come together anyway. And it all culminates in a glorious, chaotic, unexpected end. I found myself seeing the end approach without a clue as to how it was going to end. Then the felt so much like this was the only way it could have ended!

Blackfish City is a stylishly written novel with bright, clean, razor-edged prose and a vividly imagined, plausible near-future world. The stakes of the plot are high, and the novel packs quite an emotional heft to it. Miller particularly deserves credit for mostly managing the rare and delicate balancing act of having fundamentalist ideology as one big negative force in the plot but not failing to see fundamentalist characters as three-dimensional individuals with comprehensible human motivations.I do have one critique, though it's subtle enough that it took me days to put my finger on it. Without spoilering: psychographically targeted propaganda plays an important role in the worldbuilding. This is sharp, up-to-the-minute stuff. However, I realized that it made me just a little uneasy that, while the vast majority of the book is very much "Show, don't tell", that isn't true of this important social/plot point. As the readers, we're never suckered into falling temporarily for the fictional propaganda. And so there's just the slightest touch of "Well, at least we're too good to fall for that" that the sensitive reader can be left with.

Beautiful. Relevant. My heart wants this tale not just to be about a rallying cry for justice, about a story that is a catalyst for social change and upheaval to corrupt systems, the triumph of the just and the good, but for it to BE that catalyst, that rallying cry. Because while it is about our future, about a fantasy of a strange time that might almost come true or may never, it is also a story about us. It is the story of the fall of our civilization. Maybe the fall is necessary. But we have to land somewhere.

It reinsures that AI can be understood and applied by almost anyone. This book is great for anyone who is generally interested in the topic as well as for scientist, engineers, or businessmen who are interested in applying AI techniques in their work .

Being an old IT data analysis hand, I’d already heard of many of their statistical analysis case studies. But I think a business person will enjoy them, and understanding how "data people" see the world and using them effectively to analyze information.

An excellent introduction for anyone who wants to learn about artificial intelligence. It's an uplifting, realistic, and often funny account.

Alicia has good ideas. However, the "book" appears to be a "you pay for her advertising of her courses" . . . any referenced materials are accessed through buying her training courses. So, did purchase one of them and she is good at what she does, no doubt about it. Like any training, this is not a "get rich quick" idea and, unless you work the program, it becomes just another "chalk it up to experience" purchase.

The book gives enough to wet the appetite to prepare you for the sale of her course. There could've been more "How To" without giving away the farm. I understand the author is here to make money so I can't fault that. But I believe a tad bit more could've been disclosed. I don't recall the last time I read a book cover to cover in a 2 hour span. Overall a decent buy for $10. I've blown that on junk with no value. At least I have somewhat of a better idea and her YouTube videos help some too. Doesn't hurt that she is gorgeous so viewing the videos is a double win.

This book was very insightful. Alicia Cox paints a clear illustration of How she "Gets The Deed" to homes without putting any money down. Helping distressed sellers while reaping rewards is a "win-win" for everyone including lenders. If you are trying to build your Real estate empire, this book is a must have building block for success.

Good book and just kinda needs a little more specific info rather than examples of her experiences. It's clear throughout the book that the focus is on getting you to take her course which may be a good idea too....but I'm kind of on-the-fence about the approach

This is a very good reference book for the C programming language. For absolute C beginners I would also recommend used/older editions which are equally good for this purpose and less expensive (e.g. Beginning C 4th ed, Programming C 3rd by Kochan, C Primer by Pratta, and of course the ANSI C K&R). I bought this book because I was interested in the new multithreading libraries including in the C11 standard and for a better reference for C99 additions like standard ints and the complex datatypes. I was not disappointed. The examples about creating, suspending, and exiting from threads are very good, well structured, and with well-paced increased complexity. Wished that some of the examples had side-by-side comparisons between the new C11 multithread.h functions vs the POSIX pthread.h functions since pthreads are so popular, but other than that, very satisfied with this chapter. I should also mention that the last chapter contains many examples about the new Unicode extension in C11, which might be an useful resource for those coding with international datasets. Although many of the early chapters in this book are very similar to the previous 4th edition, you see a lot of preference for the new C11 thread/memory-safe I/O functions over the traditional I/O functions. There are many code examples about the new safe functions, some which unsurprisingly did not changed that much and others which changed significantly (for example, fopen_s is very different from fopen: no FILE * return). As a side note, I have *not* yet been able to compile the example using the threads.h library with the Mac gcc-4.8 fink port. I will update this review as soon as I get them running. If you are interested in portability over 32-bit and 64-bit systems, you might find very useful the section about the standard int datatypes (e.g. int32_t and int64_t), which have been available for some time. I thought that some of the examples in this book were going to cover the preprocessor macros for printing out standard int datatypes (like PRid32 and PRId64), or otherwise the developer will be required to reach back to the %ld or %lld for formatted printing. This left me a little confused.The examples in this book about the complex datatype were very good. I personally prefer using complex notation in my DSP libraries over the "struct { double re; double im; }" found in traditional code, which often evolves in many #define statements even for simple math operations. With the complex extension in C99 you can add complex numbers just as you will do for ints or doubles. It makes the code more readable and also shorter! Be careful however if using the complex.h library with legacy code, since some functions defined in this library could probably also exist in older libraries.In conclusion, I am glad I purchased this book. Great reference for just learning the language or getting familiar with the new extensions in the C11 standard.

The author does a great job of explaining components of C, then uses them in an example exercise. He then explains how the program/exercise worked. He starts off in the book with the basics and progresses along the way to material that is more difficult, but he is careful with his explanations so as not to go over your head as a beginning C programmer.

Who am I? I have messed with computers since my TRS-80 Model III back in the 80's when I was a kid. For two years, I was a computer science major in college in the early 90's. Back then, I learned BASIC, Pascal, Cobol, & Fortran. I know Pascal fairly well. Right now, I am mostly a high-end user of computers in my work. I decided to get back into the art of programming somewhat for fun & also as a way to integrate some of the at knowledge in what I do know, which is work in social services. I decided that I was going to learn C. It was available back in the 90's when I when to school and had wanted to learn about what others had told me is a powerful language. I get that C is not used as much since the advent of C++, C#, and Objective C. Eventually, I want to learn C++ & Objective C, but my old fashioned thinking had it set that I would probably do well to learn C first. I had an old copy of this book by Horton (2nd edition) and it appeared dated. Decided to spend the money and get an updated copy that I can read on my iPad. This is turning out to be a very informative book. I find it very detailed and fairly easy to read given the fact that I have some knowledge of programming already. Judging from what I read, I think that someone new to programming could probably find it useful as well as he does appear to be following what I learned as sound programming practices. Horton takes the time to explain most everything about the sample programs he uses and the various ways to accomplish the same tasks using different methods. He appears to have natural ability to simplify what is really a rather complex subject. If there was one thing I would criticize is his over-reliance on the C11 standards. I am limited to the gcc compiler, which only accomodates some of the standards. In fact, in my research, there are few compilers that actually are completely faithful to this standard. While this is not a huge issue, I did find it a bit irritating since that standard is so new and most of the major compilers are not yet there. That is the only complaint that I have about it to date. So far, i am on chapter 7 and learning about pointers, which is probably one of the most complex things in C. Horton is making it sound pretty manageable. I would recommend this book to novice programmers and for those who have some experience programming and want to learn about C.

This book is the latest edition of an earlier one purchased for professional use.

Comprehensive, and well written, in an easy to read format. I definitely would recommend this book as a first programming book.

I have read the first three chapters. The book takes you into many C programming aspects from the beginning. Very nice to follow.
