I kind of got this book because it pisssed off Piece Pizzera a bit and sometimes they need to be taken down a peg (though they do make great pizza).However, after looking through the book, Steve has no idea what he is talking about. He breaks down pizza into different categories and then repeats the same places a couple of times.As expected Piece did not make the list, but based on some of the places he picked, that was done to be vindictive, not because he doesn’t like their pizza. He put Jett’s on the list. A freakin chain!!!Speaking of Jett’s, the page right after his glowing review talk about how the “deep dish houses” downtown are overrated and don’t care about their craft. Has he been to Jett’s? They don’t care. Their main competition is Little Caesar’s. I actually like Jett’s occasionally, but to put it in the same level as local and family owned businesses makes him lose all his credibility.Also, who is this book written for? Suburbanites scared that if they enter into the city, they are going to get shot? Why not pick more obscure and far away suburbs? I was surprised not to see Rockford on the list.I really wanted to give this book a chance. However, it has come to me that the Hungry Hound really is a hack. The pictures are great, but the reviews are garbage.Use Yelp instead

All encompassing book on Chicago pizza. It would be fun to use it as a guide to trying all 101 pizzerias in the Chicagoland area. Who doesn't love pizza and this is the perfect gift for a pizza lover, regardless of where you live.

I like that this was written by a non Chicagoan so his opinion isn't clouded by "PIGUE" (Pizza I Grew Up Eating)I'm going to use this as a guide to try some places I might have driven by otherwise.

This is a fantastic book and a must-read for anyone who enjoys pizza and wants to learn all about the different styles. I always thought Chicago was just a deep-dish town, but Steve brilliantly debunks that myth. I cannot wait for my next trip to Chicago and try some of these suggested places.

Absolutely LOVE this book! I've lived in Chicago my whole life and have tried what I thought was a good amount of pizza places around the city... I was woefully wrong. This book has great reviews of places I'd never even heard of that I've now tried and love! Couldn't recommend this more for anyone who loves pizza! Great as a gift for a Chicago pizza lover too!

Overall this book was helpful in learning about my daughters migrains but the diary section at the end was a little hard to use. Through my research to help my daughters I found a book that works great and is simple for parent and child to use. The title is "The Headache Detective" by John Ricker. It's a headache workbook designed for children that is easy to follow. It is prabably a little more helpful pinpointing what is causing your child's headache than Dr Diamond's book. This is in contrast to a lot of the "idea" posts you see on websites, pinterest, instagram--even a lot of magazines, where someone came up with an idea, tried it out and wrote about it in the span of a week. How the plants in such designs hold up over time, or how the structures last or what upkeep is required is left out of the picture, entirely (see: the majority of terrarium how-to's). While reading the adorable new book, How to Window Box, Small-Space Plants to Grow Indoors or Out by Clarkson Potter designed, certainly, with me in mind, I couldn’t help but think about my mother. No, she was not a gardener, but she did make Easter baskets for every attendee at her annual Easter brunch. She took a month or more to put these baskets together, each with a different theme based upon the interests of the recipient. As I held this book in my hand I couldn’t help but think what a wonderful theme window box gardening would be for an Easter basket. This book, a bag of potting soil, some liquid fertilizer, a few plants, not to mention a fairy garden accessory or two, and you have a wonderful gift for your green-thumbed friend. But I digress.If you, like me, no longer garden on a grand scale, this book is for you. Talk about inspirational! The pictures alone will have you champing at the bit to get outdoors and start gardening, but the information is the most valuable aspect of this book, and there is plenty, but I am getting ahead of myself. The book provides a nice introduction to window box gardening, and then guides you step-by-step through the process. It provides you with a wide variety of theme gardens, one or more of which will no doubt tickle your fancy. I’m not going to list them all, but some of them include The Sandbox, The Herb Garden, The Detox Box, Edible Petals, The Jungle Box, The Salad Bar, and The Window Bog. Intriguing? I have to tell you, every one of the window boxes in this book intrigue me. Each one mentioned is not only thoroughly described, but there is a nice, easy-to-read chart on the page that will provide a quick guide to creating your own box. It will suggest a location, provide information on recommended light, window, soil, how much you need to water and fertilize, and even give you ideas for topping the box in order to make it look pretty.Resources are provided in the back to help you get started, and there is also adequate information to allow you to customize your window box to your own interests and needs. Should you have difficulties (Heaven forbid!), there is a nice section on troubleshooting.If you like to garden like I do, or if you have a friend who does, pick up a copy of this book. I lived in Mozambique from 2017-2018 and these stories from the early 90s are still incredibly relevant. A lot has changed but history repeats itself. I'm glad I finally read this before I go back to visit. The author has a dark sense of humor, as do many people in Mozambique, so you have to keep that in mind when you read it. There's a lot of historical info in here, and I appreciate that Middleton traveled out to the northern provinces and different parts of the country because it's still easy to have a skewed view if you only ever visit (or read about) Maputo. He's English and definitely not without bias but he does an admirable job representing issues from multiple viewpoints - foreign, local, NGO, corporate, one political party or another.

I am planning a trip to Mozambique this fall. I generally enjoy the travel book genre. And as there are not a lot of books about Mozambique and this one has a catchy title, I checked it out from my local library. I read it, and I am glad that I read it. But I found the book ok at best.These are my criticisms. First, the events of the book took place in 1992. This is a long time ago and is now outdated. I keep wondering how Moz has changed. Second, the author's travels around Moz seem aimless. There seems to be little overriding objective or mission. Third, the author's recounts of history are amateurish at times. For example, at one point, he refers to "elephant murderers," a reference to people that profited in the 18th century from the ivory trade. He is obviously judging these people by today's standards, an act of folly in my view. To state the obvious, today's moral standards are much different than those in the past, and very few historical figures would hold up to today's standards. To refer to these people in this manner, is, as I said, amateurish, at best.So, if you really like the travel book genre and plan to go to Moz, this book is ok, especially if you read it with knowledge of the above limitations.

The author takes the reader on a complex but fascinating journey into his assessment of UFOs, fairies, elves, gnomes (and even 'crop circles') and the like, arguing these visions all share a common source, a source that is both devoid of physical substance yet able to project a degree of physicality. As well stated by other reviewers, the author weaves together many documented sightings of all of these mysterious entities, offering an explanation steeped in Jungian philosophy of the 'collective unconscious' and 'archetypes', the writings of ancient Greeks, Romantic poets and writers and others to make his case. These visions are both 'real' and 'unreal' (in a strictly materialistic sense). They emanate from the 'world soul' and the individual counterpart, the intuitive ego. They are an integral part of our existence which manifest themselves in different guises, based upon the prevailing culture of the percipients.In order to fully appreciate this rather scholarly work (although it is not stuffy and dry), it would be beneficial for the reader to have a good, basic handle on the works of Jung, John Keel (who believed UFOs and other enigmatic visions were 'ultraterrestrials' or 'elementals'), the works of Dr. Jacques Vallee ( including his books 'Passport to Magonia' and most all, 'Dimentions'), Christian doctrine, Greek mythology and perhaps cultural anthropology. If armed with such a background, the work makes a lot of sense, and gives the reader much to contemplate. In addition, a very similar take on this topic can be found in Keith Thompson's 'Angels and Aliens, UFOs and the Mythic Imagination'.Does it resolutely answer the question, particularly with regard to the UFO phenomenon? Not for me. Like other works seeking to provide a 'solution', the book offers up selective examples. When an obscure British 'UFO sighting', for example, is determined to be simply the moon, the implication is that such perceptual errors are the norm. The author also states that UFO sightings (as well as photos and videos) are ephemeral, somewhat like ghosts, and are never seen in such a way as to provide perspective; they aren't seen in relation to buildings or other material objects. That may have been so when the book was published, but in the years since, there has been an explosion of photos and videos, sometimes taken by many different people with different cameras. He fails to adequately explain the solid physicality of the enigma. Also puzzling is the idea (brought forth by others as well) that the phenomenon expresses itself based upon the culture; that UFOs are just the contemporary image. If this is so, then why are there so many images from antiquity (paintings, cave drawings, coins, etc.) that show what appear to be, when seen by modern eyes, UFOs? Such objects would have no meaning to people in early history, so they became 'flaming shields' and so on.Within the context of Mr. Harpur's work, the points raised above flow from the 'rational ego' holding dominance. While this may be the case, it is an unavoidable aspect of the human condition.For those with a truly open mind, the book can provide a fascinating perspective, quite far apart from the usual theories. I found that after reading the book, I felt a near compulsion to revisit the early works (1940s and 50s) of Meade Layne. His notion of what he called 'etherians', or higher intelligences existing in higher vibrational 'planes', able to slip into and out of our word by changing their rate of vibration from denser to less dense, becomes more compelling as a model.While I do not feel the author has solved these mysteries, I can't emphatically say he is wrong. I can, however, emphatically state that this is an important work, well worth reading. You may agree or disagree, but it will make you think.

Harpur has written a masterpiece. If you have always been baffled by UFOs and such matters, Harpur gives a wonderful guide and explanation about these phenomena. The book is well researched and full of example encounters, which are explained in terms of his Platonic world of Imagination. I think this is the best book I have read on the subject of Blake's Imagination, Jung's Collective Unconscious, the Platonic Realm, UFOs, Folklore and other such matters, and I have read many such books on the subject.

This book is absolutely full of interesting metaphysical, weird, and fascinating tales, theories, and history. You will come away from each chapter both entertained and wondering. You will question reality, and perhaps question your own mind. What are these strange creatures mankind has encountered for ages? What are these sightings, abductions, manifestations, hauntings, etc. that have gone on for millenia? Is it possible that all these things are related? Fairies and bigfoot and poltergeists and ghosts and demons and djinn and aliens and bigfoot? Is this world suffused with a daimonic reality that we have to come to terms with?Whether you believe in any part of these phenomena or not, the book is greatly entertaining. Definitely worth a BUY if you have any interest in these subjects. Great writing. Great ideas. A great experience.If you enjoy reading about topics weird and wonderful, incredible and frightening check out all of the excellent books by Nick Redfern, John Michael Greer, Diana Paxson, John Mack, Graham Hancock, and Jim Marrs. To name a few.

I have mixed feelings about this book. Certainly some good thinking and writing, and, I thought, it got better as I got into it. I don't feel everything that is Daimonic can be explained Harpur's way though. But it's good to read things with a different perspective.

Patrick Harpur has really hit the proverbial nail on its head with this work. I've studied philosophy, comparative religion, psychology, spiritualism, metaphysics, the paranormal, myth, mysticism, cryptozoology, ufology, et al for decades and have actually come to the same conclusions Harpur has. I especially share his belief that "thought forms" ("daimons") are REAL (become so) and as I read this work I began to further develop my own idea that the ubiquitous consciousness of "Creator" (or whatever one calls "It") has an influence on creation (all of it) in a manner that science and religion are totally unable to define (and unwilling to define). I highly recommend this book and suggest that it be preceded by "The Trickster and The Paranormal".

Has beautiful, evocative photographs, along with some decent travel writing. Succeeds in giving a sense of the diversity of regional cuisines. Doesn't seem particularly great as a cookbook to be used, though, at least for most readers. Those who are less experienced with Vietnamese cooking would be better served by a book focused on classic dishes. Yet a decision was clearly made here to "dumb down" the terminology to a beginner level, keeping Vietnamese words to a minimum, and not printing any of the accents/diacritical marks on those that are used. Which is fine except it makes it harder to get the right ingredients. If you go to a Vietnamese/Asian market and ask for "swamp cabbage" (p. 34) nobody will have any idea what you're talking about -- but if you show them the word "rau muong" they'll get it for you because it's very commonly used. Same thing with a bunch of other ingredients. And if you ask for "com" (as written on p. 264) instead of "côm", they'll assume you just want regular rice ("cơm"). (If the author is reading these reviews, I'd suggest putting a glossary with more actual terms online.) That said, there are some creative dishes here that I'd like to try.

I have come across quite a few cookbooks, not just Vietnamese but Italian, French, Mexican, from the Southern US, etc.I am sure the hard copy is quite beautiful but I was blown away by how nice the kindle edition was. I have a few cookbooks in kindle where the formatting was so far off, with the recipe centering by 3-4 inch widths per page.I immigrated to the US in April 1975 when I was only two yrs old. I am able to speak the language to my parents and relatives but I cannot read or write in Vietnamese. Therefore to try to write down the recipes from my mother was quite difficult especially when she doesn't exactly need to measure.This recipe book is great because from the ingredients to the pictures, they are almost identical to how my mom made it! Now I have the precise measurements.....because people like myself were not exactly born to cook. I can't wait to try out these pictures and to salvage the many recipes I have been trying to write down from my mom before it's too late.The most beautiful part of the book are the stories about Vietnam and the pictures are just stunning. I feel like the rating largely depends on why you are buying this book. Yes, it has beautiful photography.. yes it has many insightful tips and stories about vietnam… No, that is not what I am looking for when I buy a cookbook. It does have some excellent recipes, (some are not so excellent, as the author wrote this recipes as if you lived in vietnam and could actually get all the rare ingredients they have - without mentioning substitutes commonly found), but overall this is a very pretty picture art book equal in size (but not print quality) to any Taschen series art book. If you are looking for a great book for guest to thumb through, look no further. If you are looking for recipes (this is mostly a story book).. and the recipes here are largely ones you cannot make.

Made a few of these recipes today and they were quite tasty. The book itself has lovely images and a lot of interesting background info. I found it helpful to look through to learn about regional specialties prior to traveling to Vietnam. But be warned before you buy--the book is massive! Much larger than I expected and quite heavy

Coffe table style book with okay photography. Not of the highest quality. The recipes are kinda repetitive. Just okay.

I felt like I was traveling through Vietnam and sampling the food. Very entertaining. Well written. The photos are quite good. I know much more about Vietnam now and am grateful for the experience.

I've only been using "Vietnam" on my tablet so far, so I can't tell you how it looks on a Kindle, but on my tablet it's excellent. There's always the worry that Kindle editions of recipe books will be dreadful, with eye gougingly terrible layouts or just looking dull as the dishwater you end up with after dinner (unless you have a dishwasher, in which case I'm completely envious of your shiny crockery, slovenly yet near instant post-dinner entertainment, lack of lower back pain or prune fingers). Vietnam doesn't have any such issues, it looks brilliant on my tablet, with beautiful photography (not just food porn you usually find in cookbooks, but actual travel photography from around Vietnam) which really make you want to explore the book fully.This book is divided into sections based on regions in Vietnam, so there's a section on Ho Chi Minh, Hoi An, Hanoi and many other places from North through to South Vietnam. Every section has starts with the various bits of information about the specific place in Vietnam itself which are relatively brief and very interesting. The sections aren't organised in any particular manner that I can see, there are chicken recipes followed by fish recipes, then beef, then back to chicken etc. This doesn't get in the way of exploring the recipes or finding them later. I've just bookmarked my favourite recipes so it's easy to find them. I've tried 3 or 4 recipes already and they've all worked out really well. The wonderful thing about Vietnamese cooking is there's a real freshness to it, everything comes together so well , it's smells amazing as you're cooking and tastes just as good, if not better once it's served.This is a comprehensive recipe book of Vietnamese cooking. You'll find favourites from your local restaurant as well as new and delicious things to try. I'd actually urge people to buy the Kindle version over the print version; the Kindle version 70%, takes up 100% less space on your bookshelf, is easily bookmarked and annotated without making the book ugly, and can be taken with you anywhere so you can plan your dinner during your commute (and make colleagues or friends jealous that you're going to be eating some seriously tasty food while they have boil in a bag mystery meat). The majority of ingredients required for the recipes should be easily found in any major supermarket or in Asian food stores. This book is well worth the (little) money you'll pay for it, absolutely buy it your stomach will thank you.
